Quite an enjoyable read, mostly setting up the story and the characters, lots of not believing the things that are happening and seeing them, and confusion, angst, and new found power. I read (and watch) a lot of paranormal stuff so I am familiar with this kind of entry-to-the-world and will have to keep reading to see how I feel about it but so far so good.
Also, this will be my LAST finish of the 2019. Starting a new series... right at the end of the year! That's how some years go. ...more

From this collection I really enjoyed Three is a Sacred Number by Carrie Cadwallader, which has a wonderfully haunting environment and story that pitted victory vs defeat in a unique way. I also, of course I enjoyed the FXXK Writing * column!

This was a re-read for me, I read the play about a month ago and was already ready to hear the story again. So brilliant. And great performances too. I am a huge fan of Michael Sheen so was thrilled to find this on Scribd. Will watch/listen to anything he is in! So good!...more

It took me a bit to get centred in the plot, but I loved the different perspective and characters and all the wild tech and abilities. There was so much to unpack, I'm already thinking about re-reading it!
Shout out to Jenn from Remembered Reads for mentioning it in a video. Your recommends are awesome!...more

I did mark this one down a little bit though as there is a fair amount of "Girls, ew! They can do cool stuff or are into cool things!", and I found that a bit disappointing even though Suki was a cool character. There was some learning on that, but I just wasn't expecting it so it threw me off. Because of course girls can be anything they want to be!
As always, I love the art in these books and it was a particularly good fit for reading a "Green and Black" book during Grinchathon. Totally perfect!
Looking forward to continuing the series and seeing what Danny's next adventure is. ...more

Maybe I was just waiting for the final volumes to go out. I think they did a great job bringing it all to a close (especially after volume 8 which was one of my least favourites).
Sometimes when I read really long series, I feel like a bit of an outsider. I don't remember all the characters, all the moments, all the complexities of the story so when it does come together I am happy and believe it but I don't always *feel* it in the moment. That's on me for probably reading too quickly. All that said, I was happily surprized that this one did give me the feels. I'm glad I stuck it through because it was totally worth it. I also love the art....more

I think that's where it lost me, when going to a bar was unthinkable. They are all adult characters here! Anyhoo, not my flavour (and that's okay). ...more

I also really loved that it didn't go super-alpha quickly, which I find a lot of PR does. The female protagonists stands her ground, knows she has to look out for her own interests and has a say in what happens (if) she wants to continue down the road of the adventure/romance/conflict/peril/shenanigans. I loved it. Will definitely be continuing the series!...more

We follow someone returning from years at battle to find his lands being run by a (forgotten) ward who is in the midst of creating the joy 12 days of Christmas for the people. She's young and optimistic, he is tired and slightly bitter. He can be quite a curmudgeon, and I think if this was novel length the persistence of his pessimism might have gotten to me but for novella length it worked out a-okay.

This was a pretty fun holiday novella about man who comes back to his hometown and is quite a Grinch about Christmas and a woman who stayed but hasn't had good relationships.
I liked the characters, and both their back stories and they both definitely had personal development which was really nice but I do feel like it got ever so slightly repetitive which feels odd to say for a novella.
That said, I still have hesitation about the age gap, which is generally something I can enjoy but given they knew each other when they were younger (when she was three), that felt on the edge. That aside, the chemistry between them was great especially early on in the book and for me that is key for a racy read.
