I think the coming of age stuff is relatable. I think the poignancy works really well with these kids trying to find their way in a world of weird and incomprehensible adults
It's pretty surreal and the tone is all over the place. I don't know if it blunts the sad parts or adds to it. I don't totally understand the kid that just sees things that aren't there.

I think the secret formula for this series is that the premise is silly, but all the characters and situation are super grounded and filled with pathos.
Whether it's living a non-conformative lifestyle, not bending to social pressures, or being lgbtq+, this story does a great job at taking the non-standard marriage between a BL fan girl and a closeted gay man and never makes it a joke or sham. These two are happy and if it doesn't match what society says, that doesn't matter

The first thing I did upon finishing this was check the wiki page to see how it compares to the summary of the original work by Dazai.
Overall, I don't know if Ito's weirdness and goofy humor mesh with the serious and depressing story being told with No Longer Human. Honestly, it's a little off putting to see Ito depicting such grounded tragedy, sex, and self-loathing
So is the cousin stuff just made up by Ito? I don't see any of that mentioned in the summary on Wikipedia, but again, I'm not sure if a weird incest sub plot is in Ito's wheelhouse.
I never would have read the original work, if not for Ito's adaptation bringing spotlight to it, but I'm left feeling like I had the less than optimal experience with the work. Can you believe Dazai also wrote Run, Melos? So popular in Japan...more
