The Daddy/boy bit felt a bit off to me, but the power dynamic itself worked well. Just be prepared for lots of dirty talk and sexy times. Lots and lots! Otherwise it was fun and sweet and an easy read. I enjoyed it....more

But the good kind of weird, I enjoyed it. There is no real plot, no lust, no passionate relationship. Just two people with lots of baggage and quirks getting to know, like and eventually love each other. I enjoyed it, and after I read the short Merlin in the Library I liked it even more. I can only recommend to read it together with the second instalment Agents of Winter, which is focused on Martin....more

Sadly, it's more tell than show and I neither felt the chemistry between the MC, nor the excitment of the cases. I still enjoyed it very much (hence the rounded-up 4 stars) and have high hopes for the rest of the series just because of the cuteness-loving human and the child-like vampire. The characters are really fun!
Edit: I read three instalments and really enjoyed it, because of the quirky characters I have to rate it 4 stars overall, though the writing style is still too much tell and not enough show (and it needs more editing). Also, I totally guessed wrong about what kind of paranormal Turney would end up being, good surprise.
As you can't review the forth instalment on goodreads: 3h 42min, 12.06.24, 3 stars - barely three stars. Too much sex and the whole first case with the party was just weird. The case itself was boring and the way it was handled felt wrong. I had higher expectations for the final instalment....more

It was a bit different than your standard stories. Two people not able to communicate properly, having very different cultures and even species, finding love and their personal happiness with and in each other over the span of many months. It has only three characters with the protagonist not doing much of anything day in and out, other than fail at fishing and reading books. Which means there is not much dialogue and a lot of internal monologue. And still, I very much enjoyed it. It was funny and sweet and I will definitely read it again.
"Next time I say, Ooh what's that, let's go have a look... For fuck's sake, stop me, will you?"
"Jesus, Jerry. Don't touch his dick, are you crazy? If he won't let you touch my octopus, I can all but guarantee he won't be happy if you go for his dick." [...]"I shouldn't have to touch a guy's dick to prove I'm not homophobic. Even if it is a very pretty dick."
If he wanted to throttle me, he could. If he wanted to hurt me, he could. If he- He booped my nose. He even made a weird little honking-adjacent noise as he did it.
He looked terrifying. Also a little bit hilarious, because anyone naked and running at full speed looks hilarious. But mostly terrifying.

I really don't like the omegaverse or how omega's are opressed and stereotyped in most stories. Sometimes I feel like giving it a try, and most often it turns out meh. I like Burns' works and decided to give this series a try, and this time it turned out really well for me. To my surprise I didn't regret it one bit! The main characters are not the alpha and omega stereotypes, but interesting and very different characters. I liked reading about them and will continue this series. As a standalone I find it not quite fulfilling, but I hope the characters all grow more in the following instalments and I am looking forward to it....more

By the third book I was a bit bored with the simple, repetitive and predictable plot, but I really liked the fourth book (which can be read as the last book of the series, the main plot is solved). So as a whole I can recommend it.
3.5- stars - I very much enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything special. There was no sexual tension and the progression of their relationship did not feel natural. I also recognised the baddie as soon as they were introduced, as is often the case with such stories. Still, I liked it and will continue with this series. The variety of non-humans is delightful and it is a light-hearted, easy and quick read :)...more

I can't honestly say these books are good. There is no plot, the story telling isn't good and the writing is basic. However... I knew before beginning the series to expect a low quality, and with that in mind I had an overall positive reading experience. I actually liked most of the books and will probably even reread them at some point. So I decided to round my ratings up in most cases, to 3 stars.
side-note: They should not be read as standalones (obviously the first one can be read as such). I don't know why the author says they can be!
Now on to my original review for this book: 2.8 stars - Based on other reviews I expected a nice read, but not a quality read. And that was spot on. The writing is basic and there is no plot. Reading it was enjoyable but had me feeling a bit listless. A whole book without a plot (or copious amounts of humour, that'd work too) is good for simple entertainment as long as you know what to expect. I will probably even read it again at some point. The 'story' is about a healer mage who got bullied over a century for having defective magic and a terminally ill 23-year old human man falling in love (fated mates). EDIT: I reread it and still felt exactly the same. A nice read but a tad boring without anything interesting happening....more
