This is his last book, a novella that draws together different sets of characters (in a third person periodically interrupted with an "I"), cross-cutting between their stories. The writing has his trademark brilliance, at times verging on self-parody; there's an AA storyline (abandoned fairly quickly), a sexual identity thread, and (most pronounced) an environmental angle. A plot does come into focus, and there are several startling/shocking scenes that jump out of the lambent prose. The ending made me gasp 鈥� a beautiful retreat into artifice: "But that is another tale, and as I said in the beginning, this is just a story meant to be read in bed in an old house on a rainy night." I happened to read it on a night of constant rain 鈥� a spookily perfect conjunction of page and world.
