This wasn't as 'space heavy' as I predicted but it was an enjoyable memoir to read (well, listen to).

I particularly loved Leland's passion for STEM education and inspiring future generations. His determination to see life setbacks as mere stepping stones to his next path was very inspiring.
Predicting many more space memoirs in my future....more

I don't know you guys. There was a lot about this that I wanted to love (gang of misfits, space adventures, found family, the banter) but ultimately I found myself just wanting to get to the end of it.
I can't help but compare this to the Illuminae Files which had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Unfortunately, Aurora Rising was kind of unsurprising. Aside from the lacklustre plot, the constant attempt at comic relief really slowed down the plot. I'm all for sarcastic wit (as you'll see below) but it felt like the characters were competing with one another in every piece of dialogue.
This brings me to another problem: the seven POVs. That's right. SEVEN. And it took so long for me to be able to differentiate between them all.
It's also so unbelievable that Aurora has been asleep for a few hundred years and wakes up on another planet, and really doesn't seem that shocked by her new surroundings? She was the ultimate Mary-Sue who was instantly liked by almost everyone (minus Cat - and I really disliked the constant pitting of them against each other). Let's have more fantasy books with girls supporting girls please.
The saviour for me was Finian. I adored this sassy disabled alien and it's kind of infuriating that his character was wasted in this book. Zila was a close second favourite character and she's given barely any page time which I hope it correct in Aurora Burning....more
