NothinOk, I'm on a bit of a cannibalism kick these last few months, so I gave this one a shot and all it did was confirm that I really don't like YA. Nothing against those of you who do. It's just not for me.
I have to admit those first few pages were very attention-getting, flipping through it at the store when I was making the decision on whether or not I wanted to buy it. But DeAngelis just couldn't sustain that wow-factor all the way through. The characters, their motivations, and their nom-nom, lick the plate clean, eat all the people and their bones behaviors all lived too far above the surface when I would have loved for everything to go just a little bit deeper.
It's like the Disney version of cannibalism. meh.
If you're feeling tempted like I was, you're really not missing much. It's ok. Put the book down. Spend your money on something else.
And can we please for the love of god stop with the movie cover posters?! I should knock a star off just for that! ...more

It's an extremely impressive debut and very deserving of all of the love #bookstagram has been showering it with. Lucy Rose wastes no time jumping right into it - with an opening line like "On my fourth birthday, I plucked six severed fingers from the shower drain" you know you are going to be in for one heck of a tasty, bloody ride.
One thing is for sure. The Lamb has taught me that I don't have the right goodreads bookshelves created for the kinds of books I've been reading lately. I'm going to create some now post-haste because this needs to be shelved under messed-up-mothers, and mmm-tasty, and get-on-my-plate, and it-tastes-like-human.
I adored the short chapters, which helped give the impression that the story was moving along faster than it actually was because c'mon let's be honest, it was a really slow burn knowing what we know up front and waiting for it to finally all come to a head. And dang, did it serve up a messed up ending or what?
Seriously, I love the moment that cannibalism is having in literary fiction and horror right now!...more

This book is absolutely fucked up in all the best ways. I shouldn't like because it's really gross and makes me feel icky and I can't think of a single person I could sanely recommend this to, but I do like it. I actually really, reaaaally liked and I'm not ashamed to admit that.
It sets its own trigger warning pretty early in and once you get into it, you realize it's more "oh, the things we do because of our love of dead things" rather than "Ooooh... the things we do to dead things". Because, my god, they sure do disgusting things to them, don't they?
Not for the squeamish or the weak of heart. Unless you really like cheeky, fucked up main characters who fully embrace their weird ass fetishes and go all-in on all the gory details. Cause good lord, do they!
Sick... and messed up on soooo many levels, but oh so fun!...more

That's the best way to describe Danger Slater's latest novella Starlet. It's like an Alice in Wonderland version of the #metoo era in which an aging A lister preys on young up and coming talent in LA... but in a way that's totally disgusting and introduces a unique spin on the kind of violence that takes place behind closed mansion doors.
It's been so cool watching Danger grow and develop as a writer. I can tell he's having a lot of fun playing with traditional tropes and making them his own. There's a surprise around every corner and trust me, there's no predicting the places he's about to take you!
If you like your horror gory with a side of comedy, you need to get Starlet on your radar! ...more

I hadn't heard a thing about it and worried that it sounded a little too romancey for me, but it was in the HORROR section so I figured eh, why not, and bought it. And I'm glad I did because this one was a win!
It's a sapphic love story that starts out all cutesy and flirty and curious with weird boundaries that quickly becomes obsessive and extremely manipulative that then becomes damn right straight up horrific!
If you're an anticipatory reader, you'll figure this one out reaaaally early on but I don't think that spoils the ride at all. Honestly, it moves kind of slowly so even if you do have it pegged right, you won't know just HOW right you pegged it until those final few pages.
It's worth it. I promise. It all comes together when it's ready.
You gotta tell me what you think when you read it!

But ooooff. Really?
I like weird. This is not new news. But maaaan, you #bookstagrammers seem to like your weird on a whole different level! Shaking my head at how many of you are raving over this one.
What starts off with a young, confused girl who survived the horrors of a mentally abusive family and a sexually abusive teacher devolves into a now-grown-ass-woman who still believes her childhood fantasies, manages to marry and then convince her husband of them, and then completely unravels into (view spoiler)[a shared hallucinatory cannabalistic mindfuck (hide spoiler)].
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I couldn't find one likable character and if I had to hear about her alienness or the factory and brainwashing one more time......more
