I take umbrage with the most defining personality characteristic of the main girl being her stutter but on the flip side it is pretty cool stutter representation. I think I probably liked this more than I let on because when I finished it I immediately signed up for the website it’s published on so I can continue reading it, however I gave up once I hit the first paywall....more

The cover did slightly embarrass me, like I had to keep telling people “it’s not really as sexy as it seems I thought this was well written and it opens an interesting conversation about how an older generation sees some things as the sexual liberation gained in the 70s where you are able to sleep with who you want without having to carry shame/guilt baggage vs how todays generation are tuned into power dynamics and how abuse of power moves some situations of consensual sex from black and white into these areas of different shades of grey....more

However it read fine without the context of the other books, honestly the premise gets rehashed every single chapter in a way that makes me think it was originally published story by story in a magazine or something. Basically there is this little basement cafe in Japan where you can travel through time but there are rules! There’s only one seat that does it and you have to wait for it to be vacated by the ghost that’s always there (eventually she gets up to use the rest room, I liked that they acknowledge that it’s weird the ghost needs the bathroom in the book) you can only go to a specific time and you only have until your coffee gets cold, you have to stay in that chair, and anything you do in the past will not change the future, oh and you can only ever do this one time. Each chapter is the story of a different person who chooses to time travel, usually to go back in time and speak with someone who have since passed.
Time travel seems like a tricky literary device to employ and I think the author does it well. I’d probably read more books in this series if I come across them....more

I read all of Montell’s books after being interested in them for awhile and I was severely underwhelmed until I got to this one. Her first book (which I read last) was full of stuff I didn’t know and really challenged you to take a moment to consider the words you use and where they come from. I even learned that I’m using the word “well wrong as in answering how are you with “I’m well isn’t grammatically correct but you can’t blame me for trying to sound smarter (and failing).
Was it depressing when the feminist linguists she interviewed said that the trump presidency will probably set back progress by at least a couple of years (when talking about the pushback any sort of progress receives) while sitting in here in the future about to be subjected to a second term? Yes
My final thoughts: the title of this book is so good...more
I should have liked this book more than I did. I majored in psychology. I listen to the author’s podcast. I almost read that Joan Didion book.
