He didn't get hers because her date was in time to pick her up and take her home. 60 years later, she's helping other people get home, either by acting as a psychopomp, helping ease the passage of dying souls, or actually saving them. Cross still hunts her.
It's mostly a lot of short stories about Rose and the people she meets a time or two. It's not told linearly, but I suspect if it was, we'd see her gradually leveling up, preparing to take on the man who murdered her.
I liked it. McGuire writes good, page turning prose. I didn't love it. McGuire doesn't seem interested in diving into those deeper waters, even though she's orchestrating a fascinating story about American ghost stories and road mythology.
Made me think of elaborate backstory for a character in Supernatural we never got to see. ...more
