I am still reading it and will update my review, but after the first few chapters, one thing is painfully obvious: sadly, speculations are all over the place and are often presented as facts.
Contrary to readers who found it to be a "heavy botanological book" (LOL, what do you even read if this looks heavy to you?) I already knew some of the things described in the book about how trees work and to me it read as fiction. Surely all the wondrous things described will fascinate the average reader, but I felt "cheated" because what gave this fascination was an embellished and oversimplified description, which "saw" connections with other living organisms as if made on purpose rather than randomly created (as most things in nature). Yet, the average reader will take it as The Truth, since the specialist said so. Trees are playfully given voices, character, thoughts, even the will to decide what to do.
I am annoyed by this blend of fantasy with reality, when the aim is (supposedly) to objectively understand trees better. You can do better than that, Mr Wohlleben. You can be more honest with your readers. You can clarify that it is you who speculate how things work, because we have no way of knowing whether the trees "decided" it by themselves or it just happened and it worked (contrary to so many other ideas which didn't work).
I would accept some degree of simplification for the sake of 'taking on board' even non biologists (if it were a 'biology for dummies' guidebook) but when it is coupled with exaggerations, hypotheses, and forced conclusions presented as an explanation, it is not a fact anymore.
I cannot consider this book anything more than fiction no matter how exciting it is to read, how intriguing, how it shows things from a fresh and different viewpoint....more
