This book did not go where I expected it to go.. This is not something I've read before and it's intriguing and disturbing at the same time.
It started out intriguing, not super different from other sci-fi stories, but this went in a very different direction. It's weird and kind of dark. I really like that throughout the whole book you keep questioning everyone's intentions, especially from the Oankali. I kept being annoyed by the humans for how they behaved, but also kind of understood that they behaved that way.
What I found surprising was the exploration of gender in this book. Did not expect that from a book written in the 80s.

It's super weird, dark and gory but also kind of magical. It's not necessarily scary, but it's very mysterious and again, very dark! I had some really weird dreams because of this book. I think if you like the Wayward Children series, you might like this as well.

I loved how the history and present are beautifully intertwined in the book. Also, when you read this book, go listen to the song 'The Deep' from clipping., where the book was developed from.

Ok, maybe the fact that it's October might have helped as well.
I've devoured this book in two days. It was intense and spooky and I just couldn't stop reading. It's everything you want to read during this month.
The only thing I didn't really love was the ending. It was a bit too perfect in my opinion.

Fleetwood is the mistress of the house and pregnant with her fourth child after miscarrying the other three at only 17 years old. She is determined to keep the baby and herself alive and when she meets the mysterious Alice Grey she knows that she is the only one who can save her and the baby. At the same time the trials of the Pendle Hill witches have begun and Fleetwood’s life becomes even more complicated because of it.
I have always been curious about the stories of the many women who were burned because of suspicion of witchcraft. They have been portrayed in many different ways, but I’ve always thought of them as independent and strong women who had to fight for their place in a time where women had no voice. And I love that this book portrays them in the same way.
Fleetwood on the other hand is nothing like that, but because of her unique friendship with Alice, she starts questioning her life and position. The book had many moments that made me really angry because of the injustice and sometimes made me want to give Fleetwood a good shake, but her developments and that of the people around her were huge.
It has some magical elements, but very small and they only attributed to the beauty of the story. The characters are based on real people and I really wish this could have been their real story.
