I can mostly understand why this is a classic, and why it was important at the time it was written. The novel was a parody of other utopian novels from the time. Therefore the novel is like most other dystopian novels where the book largely feels like some sort of warning about the future which is obviously rooted in the authors own particular fears. I think it's important to read classics to understand humanity throughout history. However I do not think Huxley actually delves into the analysis of society enough to make the novel interesting beyond its relevance to the time period.
Furthermore, I think his execution was quite poor. He does not make a convincing case on why this happy society is so terrible. We intuitively understand it, but he barely scrapes the surface. He does not create convincing characters, he does not create an interesting story or plot. His future does not feel real. I am somewhat surprised that it is as famous and so loved as it is.
I'm disappointed because I think the idea of this dystopian society is interesting. He just failed to actually flesh it out and make something interesting out of it....more
