This book (and the author reading the audio) have converted me into a big emoji heart eyes fan of hers. I spent this book (happy and sad) weeping (to all the people on the bike trail that averted their eyes as I was running by listening to this book and weeping: don't worry, I'm ok) in the best way possible. I'm inspired, touched, and heartened. Thanks, Michelle Obama, just for being you....more

I was very cautious coming into this one: dark fairy tales have not necessarily been my thing in the past, but the hype is so very warranted with this one. Tales from the Hinterland has such a distinct fairy tale-ness to the stories while being completely different from any fairy tales I've ever read (including the darker ones) and I loved how the author wove traditional fantasy and fairy tale novels into the fabric and characters of this story. I loved that this book felt like a true journey and that I could not wait to get back to the story every time I got back in the car. This would make such a weird, rad movie....more

I have read all of Benway's books (kind of not on purpose, although I don't regret it) and she pretty much outdid herself with this one. I recognize that this was a pretty feel-good story about adoption and foster families and not all or most stories are like that IRL, but I think it really worked with this story and these characters. I laughed and I cried and I basically want all these characters to be real so I can be friends with them. Easily one of my favorites this year and ever....more

Only the best bookshelves for this book. Easily one of my favorite books (which is a small, discerning number as a librarian) this year and ever. I plan to give this out and share it with others like mad. I hope it shows up on all the best of lists, gets optioned for a movie, and people try to make weird Barbie dolls of the characters (weird because the barbie versions never quite look like real people, do they? I still want them to try though). I saw so much of my own family in Simon's and Albertalli has created a world of people I didn't want to leave. It is funny and serious and true and important and I love it so so much.
Also also, I had a request for a bookshelf of authors I have written embarrassing fangirl style letters/emails to. And yes, OF COURSE I WROTE TO ALBERTALLI....more

Okay, I would OBVS say that. But I want to say the first two things this time too because they have never been more true for me and for a book.
Perkins is back and better than ever. There's a little bit of Lola in every teen girl. I like that the ones who love Lola best both embrace her individuality in style as well as encourage her to dress in jeans and a t-shirt and sans wig if she wants to that day. Perkins does a good job of not villainizing anyone, although characters are broken and in the wrong sometimes. I liked St. Clair but I love Cricket tons more than I loved St. Clair...THERE, I SAID IT.

I wanted to read this book all of the time. I think part of it was right book at the right time, but the other part was good writing, excellent story (especially crush to other plot points ratio), sneaky historical facts (I learned about Colonial times and I wasn't even mad about it!), funny, and a lovable heroine teen Christiana TOTES would have befriended. I plan on rec'ing it left and right this fall/winter. I really wish it would have been released in summer though, considering it's a summer story, but it's good enough that I won't hold that against this wonderful book....more

This was really well-written and a great, compelling story. Know that this has a bit of language (especially the big time language word) a couple times and alludes to a sex scene. I love certain moments in this book. Sam skipping backwards while she talks to Kent, flicking a finger back and forth to mean "me and you", stuff like that that just really rings true and is good, solid writing.
The thing is, this is a little hard to recommend. Save it for a teen you know better than just random reader's advisory. There's some suicide thoughts and strong, frank talk about losing virginity....more
