From the beginning I was hooked with Lucy's humor and her relationship with her grandma--it reminded me of my mom and me. March was a reading slump for me. I tried reading several books and nothing held my interest. I finally picked up some graphic novels that got me goinMarch was a reading slump for me. I tried reading several books and nothing held my interest. I finally picked up some graphic novels that got me going again, and after really enjoying Out of Left Field, Skater Boy popped up as read-alike and I'm so glad I read it. I wouldn't have thought I would've related to a "punk" skater teen, but I guess some things are universal--the feeling of being lost, the fear of being left behind, the struggle to make sense of your emotions and then the joy when things finally start to click.
Nerada does an amazing job of making every character well-rounded and have the issues feel realistic and the outcomes organic. Wes made me frustrated, but I really liked him, and enjoyed getting to see him figure himself out. ...more
I normally love all of K's work, but this one didn't strike me as much as their others. The images are lovely as always, but I felt the plot and charaI normally love all of K's work, but this one didn't strike me as much as their others. The images are lovely as always, but I felt the plot and characters needed more development. I was often confused by things Anya was saying--I felt we needed more of her background and what happened with her mom? I did connect to Anya's want to make a difference and fear of failing, and letting everyone down, and loved the focus on community that is a part of all of K's work. I appreciate the gentle storytelling and worlds they create so will continue to check out anything they put out. ...more
