I'm not sure if the Author fights with his faith, but the religious parts are intelligently and respectfully detailed. At its core Ship of Fools is a straight space opera with horror elements. It's best to go into the book blind. The characters are perfectly written with distinctive separate personality traits. The ending will leave some people disappointed, but it is appropriate. A hidden gem any reader will enjoy with Russo's easy to read writing style....more

It centers around interstellar soldiers drafted into a war that has been going on for 1000 years, fighting an enemy that is hated as well as misunderstood. The problem with interstellar travel is that four months aboard a spaceship can translate into 40 years Earth time (or much more) . Time dilation is a scary thing and Joe Haldeman is excellent about describing it. Mandella, our protagonist returns to an Earth now an alien world that has aged hundreds of years which is a very real comparison to how returning veterans view their home when they come back from long deployments. It's a thoughtful adventure of a book that could not have had a better ending. Stephen King had a great quote after reading this for himself - "If there was a Fort Knox for science fiction writers who really matter, we'd have to lock Haldeman up there." ...more

Orwell sometimes over explains some things in the book but I enjoyed the totalitarian feeling of the government that gets more believable as time goes by. The parties slogan, 'WAR IS PEACE - FREEDOM IS SLAVERY - IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH' is a theme broken down very well and is touched on several times by the characters. The latter half of the book does a fantastic job of showing how Big Brother and The Party manipulates people and their information. ...more
