Calling this the eighth Harry Potter novel is an absolut**spoiler alert** I have a LOT of feelings and all of them are negative. Someone hold my hat.
Calling this the eighth Harry Potter novel is an absolute joke and insult to the ACTUAL Harry Potter series. This reads like a terrible fan-fiction (because it essentially is); the characters were NOT themselves, they were so out of character it was unbelievable, the twisting and destruction of the canon from the original, true series was quite frankly AWFUL. I understand that everyone has different opinions and tastes but to me, I genuinely can't understand why, as a fan of Harry Potter, someone would enjoy this utter destruction of the main series? It just doesn't compute for me. Can you tell this angers me? Just a little bit.
I'm sorry, but Bellatrix and Voldemort having a child? Absolutely ridiculous. He is NOT capable of that - his only interest is power. At any point in the books or the films did you get the impression he was capable of harbouring feelings for a woman, much less having sex with one and having a child? Perhaps in his youth, being handsome as he was, he manipulated women into doing what he wanted by charming them, but other than that I firmly believe he literally just wouldn't think of it, nor have any interest or drive to do so. Essentially, he's pretty much asexual, given the source material suggesting as such.
Now, I know what some people will be thinking 'yeah but maybe he was trying to further his legacy and all that.' No. Just no. Voldemort is not INTERESTED in that because he is too selfish and too interested in his OWN power. He intended to live forever, which would mean he himself would be his legacy - not some child???? Do YOU see Voldemort having sex with Bellatrix? Because I certainly don't. She was a servant, not even a friend, because he had no friends, only supporters.
In addition....the Snape scenes. Within the Harry Potter community, Severus Snape is regarded as a hero. JK Rowling herself idolises Severus, going so far as to have Harry name one of his children after him. But taking a deeper look into Severus and having a glance back at his previous actions throughout the book, he is actually quite a horrible person and I do NOT agree with JK’s ‘hero placement of him within the series.
Rather than romantic, Snape is obsessive. Rather than a hero, Snape is a bully.
Take his actions towards Lily, post-death. Firstly, when he hears about her death his reaction is not to inform someone right away - instead it is to go to her house and cry over her dead body before anyone else can. He steps over James, completely ignores infant Harry crying in his crib having just witnessed his mother's death and picks Lily up into his arms and sobs over her (in the film, to my memory I can't recall if this occurs in the books). Then, to make matters worse, once he’s grieved he leaves Harry alone in his crib for Hagrid to later find. That’s not the actions of a hero.
He invades Lily’s personal life.
In the last book Snape breaks into Grimmauld Place and rummages through his bedroom to find traces of Lily. Now, this is after Grimmauld Place was used as a safehouse for the Order, so he must have been thinking of doing this for a while, perhaps the moment he was allowed access into Sirius’s house. What’s worst is what Snape does when he manages to find pieces of Lily. He rips her out of a precious family photo featuring James and Harry. He disregards her family, ignores her child and her husband, tosses the section with them on the floor and steals the section featuring Lily. Snape then does the same with a letter he finds which Lily sent to Sirius. He rips off the section where she signed ‘Love Lily and disregards the rest without care.
Severus doesn’t respect her. His actions prove that. She had a child, she had a husband, she had a life. She hadn’t been friends with Severus for a long time, which was something that he himself had caused.
The way he treats his students further cements the fact that Severus really just wasn’t a good guy at all. He bullies his students. Hermione, a gifted student who took pleasure in learning and studying, is ignored and called ‘a know it all by her teacher. He’s someone who should be giving her praise for being studious and for taking the time to do homework. There isn’t even a reason for why he’s horrible to her. Some justify his behaviour towards Harry as being a projection of his feelings towards James yet if that was the case why was Snape horrible to Hermione and his other students? Neville, in particular, is treated horrendously. He’s downright evil to Neville, ruining his potions just to make Neville feel bad about himself and calling him out in front of the class to highlight his mistakes. A very large part of Neville’s low confidence issues is BECAUSE of Snape. Imagine being an eleven year old boy who already has self esteem issues and a lack of confidence, and then being routinely humiliated in front of your peers by your own teacher. Imagine how damaging that is, imagine dreading a particular class because your own teacher bullies you every goddamn lesson. No wonder his boggart was Snape. It’s not a laughing matter, despite what Prisoner of Azkaban film made it out to be. A student should not fear his teacher.
These are young children and he’s an adult. Instead of acting like one, he uses his power over them to bring them down. THUS, saying he 'saved the wizarding world' literally makes me want to vomit in my mouth. It's an insult to those who DID save it. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Tonks, Remus, R E G U L U S (who is constantly forgotten about and is a FAR more heroic person that Snape ever was). I just can't stomach it.
Furthermore, ...the line that Harry says to Albus: 'sometimes i wish you weren't my son' EXCUSE ME BUT THAT IS NOT SOMETHING HARRY POTTER WOULD SAY. AT ALL. Suffering through the life he did, the lack of father figures, the gaining of them only to be stripped away, the lack of love and affection shown to him by adults - no way on earth would he say this to his own son. This literally makes zero sense and I kind of want to punch everyone involved.
I could go on...but it is making me so angry I am struggling with the desire to punch something. So basically, all I will say is: HOW DID THIS GET PUBLISHED AND WHY DID JKR ALLOW IT AND PLEASE DON'T CALL IT THE EIGHTH HP BOOK BECAUSE LORD IT IS NOT....more
