The only thing that bumped my r2.5 stars The only reason I read this was because I liked Anna and the French Kiss. But I really didn't like this book. The only thing that bumped my rating up was the fact that Anna and St Clair appeared near the end of the story. That's it. I'm done with romance books. Don't even get me started on how whiny these brats in the story were. ...more

So, Wonder is a childrens story about Auggie, a fifth grade boy about to go to public school for the first time. The first time?! Why? Well, Auggie was born with a facial deformity, and has always been home-schooled due to his unfortunate circumstance. Of course, he gets stared at... and not every stare is friendly.
"I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse."
Is it just me, or does that sound a tad bit like self-pity? Sorrry, Auggie, but I really can't bring myself to connect with -- or even like -- your character. I am not one for touching stories about kindness, or how to prevent bullying. I know what you're thinking. Well, maybe you shouldn't have picked this up, then. You are absolutely right.

1. THE FONT. One thing I just can't stand in a book is a strange, coloured font. It takes willpower to plow through that. Day's perspective was in a gold font. Yes, a GOLD FONT. No. Just no. >:(
2. The perspective changes. Don't get me wrong, I love changes of perspective in a novel, just NOT IN FIRST PERSON POV. I have read a few books like that, and enjoyed it. But that is a very, very rare few. I usually give a book with the first person POV changes a chance, but this brings me back to the font. If an author pulls off POV changes like that, I always need to see a noticeable change in the writing style with each character. If you need a font to distinguish between the characters, what does that say?
3. TYPICAL dystopia. A huge problem I have with the science fiction genre is this. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME. Same plot, same characters, same world. More than half of all the dystopian books I have ever read start with the main character in prison (The Young Elites, Shatter Me, Possession--Okay, even though this one doesn't start right off in prison, it happens within the first 15 pages if I recall correctly) or the main character as a thief in poverty on the streets of a ruined country (Starters, The Hunger Games oh, I don't know...Legend). See what I mean? Every plot involves the main character rebelling against a society and usually being hunted down for it. Examples? Uglies, The Giver, Cinder, Delirium, Every book mentioned above... I know that is the whole point and meaning of "dystopia", but would a little originality hurt? ...more

Alice in Wonderland is a childhood favourite of mine, so I had pretty high expectations of Splintered. Unfortunately, I didn't like much anything about it. The plot was overdone. Way overdone. Alice the great-great-grandmother, then Alicia, then Alison, then Alyssa!? That is a bit much, don't you think? I was expecting a bit more from the plot. A little more substance and a little less... [image] I found the whole thing a bit stupid. And don't even get me started on Jeb. Jeez. What a loser. He helped ruin the book for me, among many other things. I almost didn't finish this. It seems to drag on and on, and the version of the book that I read had a PURPLE FONT. Yes, PURPLE. I hate fonts that are not black and normal looking. HATE THEM. It annoyed me the whole way as I struggled through the words. I am sorry to say can honestly say that this was one of the worst books I have read in 2016. Terrible. I've yet to find a fairy-tale retelling I love. ...more

I picked this up hoping for something special. It isn't special. Or even good.
