An incredibly satisfying book, hitting many of my wheelhouses. Part historical novel, part contemporary filmmaking novel, and all LGBTQ fiction. Both narratives were engrossing and fed off each other well, telling parallel tales of the lives of queer women at the beginning of the 20th century and today. It had just enough ghost story, just enough Rhode Island history, just enough Hollywood-life, and very enjoyable footnotes! Highly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an unbiased review.

One of two horror novels I read within a month that used as their center the unspoken pain inside families. In this "Ghost Story" we know that a family is damaged, although we never quite know exactly what happened, and we know they are desperately trying to start anew. But they're trying to move past the pain without acknowledging it, understanding it, or dealing with the reality of it. And this isn't the "horror" of the novel, but it is what causes the horror to take hold. At times a tough read, because it is difficult to connect to characters that are so overwhelmed by their unspoken anger, but overall worth the time.
