I have read Debbie Reynolds' autobiography and decided to read this one to get a different point of view.
It is easy to read, honest, and funny. You get a clear picture of what it was like growing up in a famous family, the good and the bad. He writes about his mother and sister's weaknesses openly, yet in a loving way. They were close and each others' strongest allies. His protectiveness of them both shines through every page.
I enjoyed the whole book and was sad when it ended, both because of what happened, and because it was so touchingly written....more

This story was a mix of research- of family dynamics and dysfunction- details of the crime and its aftermath/effects, and a love story of her mother.
That this girl was able to survive what happened and retain her sanity is a triumph. The story of her mother-good and bad-is her way of honoring her mom, both finding out the complete person for herself as well as show the world her mom was more than just what happened to her....more

I was surprised that I really liked this book. I liked Prince, but didn't know a lot of personal things about him, and nothing about his ex wife (one I was surprised that I really liked this book. I liked Prince, but didn't know a lot of personal things about him, and nothing about his ex wife (one of them) other than that she was a dancer. I figured this would be one of those vengeful ex wife slamming books, but it wasn't.
The beginning was about her growing up years and being a belly dancer. I thought it was interesting to realize, that, like Prince (and other artists), some people are born just knowing what their life's "thing" is and so the talent and dedication is natural and appears easy to those on the outside, but there is much more behind the scenes from those who are actually doing it.
Their beginning of their relationship was sweet and started as an innocent friendship, then evolved into more. I am not a mushy gushy type of person, but it was obvious even to me that they truly loved one another & were dedicated to each other.
The death of their son just tore them apart. It was so sad to read, you felt the devastation. Not being able to talk about it and work it out was one of the main things that finally ripped them apart.
Then, his changed religion and then the next wife. Still, throughout, I was left with the feeling that both of them honestly loved and cared about each other. Were really fated to be together. And all the talent and vault of music of his that we never knew about made it even more sad.
It was not vindictive in any way, and in fact, she was very fair and level headed, even with all they went through. It is even sarcastically funny in parts. I did not see this as a sell out book or way to capitalize on their relationship. Even if it was done because she needed money, it comes across as a sweet love story, and brings a more human side to Prince that us mere mortals never knew....more
