This book has a simply perfect cover and an interesting synopsis, but the name has little to do with it. The beast almost doesn't appear and it isn't as you think.
Our protagonist and narrator for the most part is Alys, when she was seven years old she sees the twins known as the "soul eaters". These girls ate the souls of all the adults of Gwenith the village where she lived, only leaving the children alive and sleeping. These are moved to Defaid the nearest village, but in this village the twins are feared a lot or as they call them "the daughters of the beast" and how these children came from a village destroyed by the soul eaters, consequently these children aren't very well seen and are accepted under strict rules.
The Elders, the ones who govern Defaid, decide to build gates around the perimeter of the village and will be watch at nights by the children of Gwenith. Then when Alys is sixteen she sees something that shouldn't and everything changes.
The romance, well I didn't like it. Is completely unnecessary for the story and a bit like insta love in an ancient era. I did not believe it.
I loved all the characters, even the bad ones because they are well founded. The problem: since it starts is the same and the same and more of the same and gets boring. At the end I was sleeping every several lines and so I finished it. A bit like to the bad.
Because of this book, I'm gonna upgrade my rate of Without Merit to three stars. Definetely is better than this.

The story is told from the points of view of Libby and Jack.
Libby several years ago and being a little girl suffered a very great loss in her life, which led her to eat to fill the emptiness of her heart. She became "The fattest girl in America" and after many therapies and several years of studying from home she goes back to school. She will have to prove many times that she is much more than her weight.
Jack has for years suffered a terrible condition that forces him to be on alert all the time and to have for friends and girlfriend the people less indicated. But when destiny unites him to Libby he will begin to see everything differently and accept the unimaginable.
I loved this book, it made me cry sometimes, but it was tears of happiness. Libby being still a teenager can teach you a few rules to apply in your life and Jack is the best example....more

"Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right."
Uff, this book has been a tremendous journey. At first I had a hard time getting used to the peculiar way of speaking and until the end whenever someone said "A'ight" (all right) tried to pronounce it and failed.
It’s a reading that I spent a lot of time because I wanted to understand everything, to live everything. So everytime they mencioned someone, some dance, an artist, I looked for it on the internet and could get more involved in the story, so much that I knew so well all the characters I felt I was with them in the middle of everything.
Starr Carter lives in a troubled neighborhood, where fights and drug traffickers are the order of the day. She and her brothers study at an outside school where the majority are rich and white. She lives between two worlds, not letting herself shows her culture in school and in her neighborhood doesn't act like "whites" because they would not approve.
While at a party in her neighborhood a gunfight was set and her childhood friend Khalil offered to take her home. On their way a policeman stops them and in a misunderstanding kills Khalil. She is the only witness.
"Khalil was silenced, but let's join together and make our voices heard for him."
How can she help Khalil's cause when all she has is her word? This is the story. It is a story that will touch you deeply because of all the repercussions that have on us human beings. The most important: live and have a voice.
A very important thing for me in this reading is to know that the book is inspired by a real movement, Thug life: The hate and give little infants fucks Everybody, proclaimed by Tupac Amaru Shakur, who was a rapper that the lyrics of his songs were focused on growing up around violence, violence against women, neighborhood difficulties and messages of racial equality. What a character and was silenced very soon, being the best example of the subject of this book.
While we wait for the film version, please read this impressive book.

This series has a very good score (4.26) and is a dystopia, so I HAD to read it.
The first 100 pages are excellent, we learn of the plague affecting the children, killing the majority and leaving the survivors with strange powers. They are called "Psi" and are so feared that they are sent to camps to "disable" them, but it is just a way of saying take them out of the way.
The children are cataloged by colors, according to their powers: blue, green, yellow, orange and red (from lower to higher powers).
Our main character, Ruby, has six years at Camp Thurmond when she is rescued along with Martin by an association called The Children's League. Ruby and Martin in the time that they last in the camp manage to hide that they are not green, but oranges. Ruby soon realizes that the Children's League actually plans to use their powers against the government.
She escapes with the help of Zusume, Liam and Chubs. Obviously, like all dystopia, there has to be a romance. In this case between Ruby and Liam, but it seemed forced and unbelievable. Yes, they have moments of connection, but I still did not connect with them as a couple.
From this point the book gets boring because, despite some setbacks, they are not so exciting. It seems to me that it has too many pages in trance between the departure of Ruby of Thurmond and the arrival to The Huidizo.
Although obviously Clancy Gray is one of the bad guys in the story, I connected with what might have been a romance between him and Ruby (only momentarily).
Although most people complain about the end, I thought it was the right thing to do.
This book could have been much better with only 350 pages. ...more

I knew that. I knew it. Second books are almost never good. And this definitely is no exception. I found it absolutely boring, I found myself doing other things in the time I usually spent reading. I was not attracted to read. Why? I have my reasons: 1. It is one thing after another, becoming predictable. Too many plot twists. 2. Ruby has eight months training with the League of Children and that training is not noticed. They beat her up constantly. She has Celaena Sardotien syndrome: one only gives her a beating and then she alone can effortlessly beat several. 3. I did not connect with Ruby and I was desperate how much I complained about being a "monster" instead of take actions. 4. I did not think Ruby would erase Liam's memory and then with a simple kiss he would remember everything. 5. The end has a horrible cliff hanger. 6. And above all, why should that character die? Why? Of course I'm going to read the third and final book of the series, but I'm sure I'm going to give a little vacation to dystopias for the moment....more

In a well-ordered universe .... this book would not have such a high rating.
It's the beginning of summer vacation and Emely's best friend, Sloane, just disappears and doesn’t respond to her calls or messages. She has only left a list of activities that Emely must do.
Emely, who understands that when she finish doing everything it will lead to Sloane, start working on it. The main problem is that Emely is extremely shy and does nothing other than the outgoing Sloane. The activities on the list are not exciting at all, but thank goodness Emely befriends Frank, Dawn and Collins, as they make the story more entertaining.
The story goes in two times, back with Sloane and in the present with his new friends. Little by little we realize that the perfect and best friend Sloane is neither perfect nor so good friend.
The ending turns out to be predictable, hurried and leaves important pending issues with Dawn and Collins.
Of course, the message is very good. It should be read by every teenager who live life through another person.
✨✨

Mare spends practically the whole book remembering what happened in The Red Queen, thinking about her feelings for Maven and Cal, recognizing how powerful she is. Mare's narrative is boring and exasperating. She is always making silly mistakes.
Everything seems to be motivated around Mare, who is never sure what to do and everything revolves around revenge. She is not a sufficiently interesting character, she is a disaster, selfish, immature and obsessed with herself. In the midst of so many people, she is alone because she doesn’t trust anyone. She even constantly forgets her family.
One of the few good things about the book is that it doesn’t revolve around romance, as it would feel forced.
The worst thing it has is the case of Queen Elara and Shace.
The last pages are full of action, but even that is not enough to save the book and as it is, it was no surprise to me, that I had already foreseen it. What I do not imagine is how the writer will fill two books with the little material that remains, unless Mare becomes bad and joins Maven on the throne.
The Red Queen was not an excellent read, just good. I expected Glass Sword to be better, it was just not.

Finally they arrived at Earth Centaury, many people stayed in The Fortune, but they add more when finally awaken the frozen ones.
Coexistence will not be easy since the natives are a monoethnic race, distrusting the thawed ones, who in turn have their own agenda and do not accept Elder as a leader because he is so young.
When they arrive to the planet they find evidence that not only was there human life, but they are being attacked and they do not know if it is because of animals or if there is intelligent life.
It is the book of the series that has cost me most to read, I found it very boring, I knew in advance who was the infiltrator, everything "interesting" happens in the last pages, definitely the romance between Elder and Amy feels forced and, although I don’t agree with the final events and some of the deaths, it was a good ending, open but with no possibility of another book....more

The possibility of life on other planets is a subject that has always fascinated me. I remember years ago it was one of my favorite discussion topics.
The main thing about these books I like: a ship full of humans, living generation after generation to reach a new planet. What I do not like are the main characters. Elder so indecisive in his way of governing the ship, which has made people rebel against him. Amy wants all things done her way and exerts her influence over Elder, not always positively. She wants Elder to leave all his responsibilities aside so he can be with her.
On top of everything that is happening in the ship, there is a new murderer, who from the beginning for me was clear who he was.
Following the tracks of Orion, Amy and Elder find information that can change the future of everyone in the ship....more
The Fortune is a spaceship that is a small world. Generations and generations live and die in it to reach the new planet Earth Centauri. What its inhabitants do not know is that they have 100 people crionized (frozen) to help them colonize the new planet.
Eldest, the leader of the ship governs it with such zeal and secrecy that it does not help Elder, future leader, to understand how he will play his role as leader.
Amy, a 17-year-old girl who was frozed with her parents, wakes up in a moment that she should not and must face living in an unknown environment.
It is not a book entirely of youthful romance, which is good. Although there is a premise for that.
The book is written from the points of view of Amy and Elder, which although I like this is an exception because in the first pages Amy is frozen and has nothing important to say, except to remember her ex-boyfriend Jason.
I could not connect with any of the characters, which are very flat and little is known about them.
It's a book written for YA, so it's a light reading. I am fascinated by the books of dystopias and although I expected more from this one, I enjoyed reading. What if I read the next book in the series? Well, of course!...more

This dystopian world is divided in two, according to the color of the blood: The Silvers, those who rule with a strong hand, who have super special powers according to the House to which they belong; and the Reds, the inferiors, those who live without rights, those who fight the wars of the Silvers and those who work, are considered inferiors.
Mare Barrow is a seventeen-year-old girl (of course, the magical age for YA books) of red blood who, while serving in the Silver Palace in a great presentation to choose the future queen, realizes, along with hundreds of witnesses, that she has the powers of the Silver. It's something never seen before. The King and Queen invent a story of her of why in spite of being Silver (supposedly) she lived with the Reds and they pair it to marry with Maven, the shadow prince.
