It's a snapshot of the time and a portrait of a changing nation. The first half of the book examines immigration in America in the second half of the 19th century and how it shaped the way American industry developed. It paints just the right mood for acknowledging how terribly tragic the Triangle Fire was. The last part of the book shows what changes were made in industry and labor laws as a result of the fire and shows that sweatshops still exist in many parts of the world.
Archival photos are well-selected and well-used to bring the time period to life. Back matter includes a bibliography, source notes, and an index.
This book would make a perfect pairing with UPRISING by Margaret Peterson Haddix, BREAD AND ROSES TOO by Katherine Paterson, or LYDDIE by Katherine Paterson. For those interested in a more recent look at immigration and sweatshop work, you could also pair this book with GIRL IN TRANSLATION by Jean Kwok.

This well-written verse novel may not be breaking new ground, but I appreciate a coming-of-age story written by an author of color, featuring a protagonist of color, and I definitely have some kids in mind who will snatch up this book.

I have recommended this series to seekers of historical fiction at my library, but I had never actually read one. It's quite an enjoyable way to experience a historical time period and facts about the Shakers were incorporated believably into the diary account of an 11-year-old girl. The narration was nicely done on the audiobook and reader Sara Barnett is a perfect match for the text, sounding authentically childlike, but not annoying. The music that's incorporated helps set the tone.

Genius inventress Violet Adams wants nothing more than to be admitted to Illyria College, a the most prestigious scientific school in Victorian LondonGenius inventress Violet Adams wants nothing more than to be admitted to Illyria College, a the most prestigious scientific school in Victorian London. The problem? They don't admit women. Undaunted, Violet disguises herself as her twin brother Ashton and is admitted. However, keeping her secret proves even harder than she'd imagined with love affairs blossoming all around her and the discovery of strange leftover science experiments in the basement of the school.
I thoroughly enjoyed this imaginative novel. The characters are well developed and I always enjoy a women-disguised-as-man story. There's plenty of humor and romance, but also some creepy bits. The plot's fairly action-packed, though I did feel it was a bit too long. Though it's published for adults, this one will have loads of crossover appeal and I'd recommend it to high schoolers who have enjoyed Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass, Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan, or Tamora Pierce's Lioness books.

But Katrina's coming and nothing with stop her. When his dog runs away just before the storm, Saint goes back to look for her and ends up going through the hurricane in New Orleans.
I think Brenda Woods tries to do a little too much here and some of the storylines fall flat for me. BUT if you're looking for a kid-friendly story about Katrina, this will certainly fit the bill.
