The Enterprise is A better book than most of the books in this series. The book highlights three from the Enterprise, but Worf is by far my favorite. The Enterprise is called in to help a world of human colonists, but there is a group of Klingons juveniles that crash landed a decade ago. Peace is needed and the three person crew goes to work. The Klingons remind me a little of the Lord of the Flies. It is action packed and also well written....more

These are three excellent novels and fit with simply good storytelling. All three books were entertaining and keep your interest. The Long Way to TexaThese are three excellent novels and fit with simply good storytelling. All three books were entertaining and keep your interest. The Long Way to Texas is about a Confederate outfit escaping from Union troops and New Mexico. They are lead by a lieutenant but the true leader is a sergeant. The main character must earn his leadership and his path is truly interesting. The Eye of the Hawk is a book about change. Tom Canfield is a good man, but as life progresses, his need for revenge becomes overwhelming. His enemy starts off as a despicable man who is simply out to make a lot of money, but over time his character changes for the better. This is a well written story. Joe Pepper is simply the telling of his life to a preacher when he is about to be hung. This is the closest of the three to a true Western and it keeps you riveted to the book. Kelton is a fantastic storyteller....more

This is two books in one. In the first, Earth has entered into space flight and met with more developed species and Earth has become the source of mercenaries. One group is trapped on a far planet by treachery from some in the central government. They must escape and meet many interesting species in their escape. The other book occurs further in the future where the whereabouts of Terra are unknown. A group of space rangers are trapped on an unknown planet and are confronted by humans, some who were also shipwrecked but others native to the planet. What surprises me is that Norton uses some of theories expressed by Ibn Kaldun who believed states become more civilized then collapse and are replaced by barbarians and the cycle starts again. Great reading. This is the author who first hooked me on science fiction....more

I have now read two of Dahl鈥檚 classic children鈥檚 books and clearly they explore the bounds of imagination. Imagination is critical in a child鈥檚 development and assists adults exercising their creativity and inventing. While weird, it鈥檚 a brilliant book....more

He follows but loses them and when the money runs out, he scouts for the Army. It is an interesting story with plenty of action....more

Philosophy bills itselFirst off, I am a Christian and while it may play some part in my rating, there is a problem I have with philosophy in general. Philosophy bills itself as a science, but does it use scientific thought. Feuerbach gets it right in that the essence of Christianity is love. We know this by the reading of the Gospel. I also agree that man in an attempt to understand places limitations on God. For example, individuals try to think of God in a human form (read the Shack). In other words, humans created God in their own image. Feuerbach tends to come to conclusions without underlying data. This is not just a problem with Feuerbach but with most philosophers, but do not totally discount his conclusions. In many cases his conclusions highlight the actions of persons, I find hard to call Christian. In his chapter on the Contradictions of Faith and Love, he gives faith a bad name by saying faith led to the wholesale slaughter of infidels. I believe true faith does not allow these actions. There is also a really good chapter on the holy trinity that made me think. I also realize this book was used by Marx and Nietzsche. So, in essence the philosophy which sprang from this book supported theories espoused by Stalin and Hitler. Frankly, most philosophy reminds me of the arguments I had with fellow students drunk and playing pool in college. Simply, the arguments made, lacked factual basis. ...more

He is bored but after a visit by the Tribal Council leader he is hired to be a special investigator for the tribe. His first case is a murder on the Ute Reservation. While the FBI has jurisdiction, as a private investigator, he is not restricted. His relationship with his new girlfriend becomes strained and his investigation heats up. It was average up to this point but it becomes really interesting in the last third of the book. I was worried about the series, but I think it definitely has places to go....more

She seeks to save the child by finding a way to get her to the other side of the wall. Good action, good characters and while it was good, I can鈥檛 say much more. The author has written several other teen books gaining critical acclaim. ...more

I have read the reviews of this book and find many do not like the fact that in one chapter men appear in black face to entertain the town. While this behavior is unacceptable today, it was not in the period in which the book takes place. I read it to get a glimpse of what life was like in this period. I prefer to see it with all the injustices that occurred in that time. Some like their history sugar coated, but accuracy in my opinion is overriding. Wilder gives her life as she remembers it and I get a clear picture of the times. The book is well written and deserves the accolades it received....more
