Maybe it was because my interests are constantly shifting and I feel compelled and inspired to read a certain kind of book at different points in time. Whatever it may be, this book was really heartwarming. I loved reading it and recognizing certain large animal treatments still used today in veterinary medicine, and then encountering some things that definitely are no longer practiced. It's amazing to see how far the field has come, and to hear the stories of an older vet from when he was just beginning his practice. I've only ever worked in small animal medicine as a certified veterinary technician, and this made me really want to learn large animal medicine as well when I become a veterinarian. This book definitely has something for everyone....more

However, the fuckboy attitude of Weston did not make him endearing to me at all. There is a lot of character development in this book and I love it. I have quickly grown to love this series and how past characters make reappearances in this novel. Claire Kingsley has a gift for writing sweet love stories with humor, drama, steam, and witty banter. I can't wait to read Caleb's happily ever after because he anyone deserves a good love story it's him. This series is just what I needed to help me get out of the reading slump I've been in, so good!...more

The little teasers and snippets she posts on her page have had me curious to read this comic, and I was not disappointed. Unnatural has such a cool premise. Essentially it's an allegory for society being against interracial and same-sex relationships/marriages, but the characters in this world are humanoid animals. The artwork is gorgeous with the punk rock vibe, and Leslie is such a likable character. I didn't know if I would really get into the comic, but I'm already reading through the second one like wildfire. The plot thickens quickly, and there are twists and turns everywhere. ...more

When I found out he was finally getting to create a Teen Titans comic after years of truly incredible fan art I was ecstatic. This was amazing. The art is beautiful, and the backstory to Raven is so emotional and adds so much dimension to her character. I cannot wait for the Beast Boy issue. This was so good I think I need to get a physical copy for my bookshelf. So so good!...more

It's been a really long time since I've read any kind of fiction that didn't have any paranormal/magical/eccentric twists to it. Kingsley definitely knows how to add dimension to characters; even the secondary characters were well fleshed out and added to the overall story. ...more

This book is important. It is a raw and deeply moving work that both connects through experience and lays bare the ingrained racism in American society. To not be physically seen, and when you are seen you're seen through the lenses of racism, stereotypes and fear. This book conveys the anger and the hurt in such a poignant way. ...more

I don't even know where to begin with this book. The writing was brilliant, brilliant I say! Brunonia had me second guessing myself the entire time. I never was really sure what was real. Is there a banshee killing everyone? Is the old lady crazy? Is the banshee real? Is this lady just very disturbed? There were so many twists and turns and shocking reveals I had to take several breaks to try and figure out what the hell was going on and what I understood was happening at this very moment in time in the book. I have never been so equally enthralled and confused by a book before. I definitely can't wait to read more of her books if this is any indication of her writing style and complex plots. If you would love some brain candy in the flavor of a book about witches, goddesses, banshees, murder, mystery, intrigue, and suspense this is your kind of delicious morsel of a book....more

This I've always wanted to read some of Neil Gaiman's work, especially after my children's literature professor spoke so highly of him in our course. This was the first of his work that I've ever been introduced to. Some of the stories like "Wolves in the walls" were not my favorite and quite anticlimactic for me, but "The day I traded my dad for two goldfish" was really cute. I can see the allure his writing could have on children. I want to read more of his work for both adults and children alike....more

In my life I have had the honor of knowing refugees from all over the world; Bosnia during the genocide of Muslims in the 90s, Columbia fleeing the cartel who killed their family, the Congo fleeing the war that has lasted so long yet the media speaks so little of, and so many more places. It is astonishing that over 65 million humans on this earth have been displaced due to war, poverty, natural disasters, violence, and other events that caused people to leave everything they knew and set forth into scary unknowns out of necessity for survival. It baffles and angers me that people are not accepting of refugees, and have so much hate in their hearts towards people just trying to survive. These stories are important for people to read to humanize refugees, and understand they are people too and their lives and stories matter. They bleed the same blood, shed the same tears, and are deserving of a safe and better life just like the rest of the world. This book is so important, and each of these amazing girls' stories will stay with me forever....more

I had been under the impression that the imaginary friend Crenshaw the cat would have a major part of the book's plot. Homelessness and poverty are big, heavy topics for any reading level but especially for the middle grade level. I was excited for this book, but the fact that Crenshaw only makes a couple of appearances to say one-liners that are supposed to be sage advice for Jackson was disappointing. The parents are pretty irresponsible and in some ways clueless as to how much their actions are upsetting the children. The mother really wants to ask for help, the dad who has MS refuses anything he sees as a handout and as a result they live a life of great instability. Jackson is forced to feel he has to be the adult of the family and scrounge for food by any means necessary. The way the children were written wasn't believable. It seemed like the kids were just mini adults and I didn't feel like I was really reading about kids at times. If Crenshaw was more of a main character, and this book showed how imaginary friends truly help kids cope with difficult situations I think this story could of had more of a potential. ...more

On one hanWhenever I finish a biography/autobiography of North Korean defectors I have a very conflicted swirl of bittersweet and sorrowful feelings. On one hand, I am so thankful that each of these people are now free from the horrible regime, and that they were able to tell their stories. On the other hand, I'm saddened because millions more North Koreans are still trapped. Compared to other defector stories I've read Heyonseo's life and escape from North Korea was "easier" (for lack of a better word) than other North Korean's treacherous journeys to freedom being victims of human trafficking and prisoners in torture camps. However, escaping and becoming a refugee at the mercy of other nations is a very difficult, scary, and uncertain ordeal, especially in today's world. She was so brave as to have escaped at such a young age even if it hadn't been her initial intention. Every time she had to change her identity my heart broke more for Hyeonseo. To flee the only home you've ever known, your family, and everything familiar, and then to have to shed your identity over and over again to keep the past behind is incomprehensible. No two defectors have the same story, but collectively their voices come together to shed light on the horrors and injustices of North Korea for the entire world to see. ...more

As usual there is no disappointment over here in Secret Circle land. Five books and I still get caught off guard with super twisty plot twists. I know I say this at the end of every Secret Circle novel but damn I really did not see that one coming. This series has truly sunk its claws into me and I literally can't imagine what the finale is going to have in store for the circle. The big bad of this book was a little meh to me in the beginning, but not anymore! I really do love a good psycho villain that just shakes things up just for the fun of it. Adds quite a bit of character development for our favorite beloved characters. All I can say is; shit is about to get real....more

Basically, it was as if the author was writing all the intense scenes she usually does but there was no build up. It was as if she was trying to write all of these crazy intense moments into one book but didn't have time for the buildup action that led to every single one. Therefore, when something crazy happened you didn't feel anything, just meh. You can't just introduce a climax event without any sort of ascending action and feeling. But since I have read the last three books despite the choppiness of this one I understood the gravity and the significance of all of the crazy climactic moments. Instead of the story being like a smooth arch of taffy it was more like small pieces of broken taffy assimilated together to form a pseudo arch with no real connection between pieces. If that made any sense at all that's what this book made me feel. Kind of underwhelming compared to the intensity and awesomeness of the three previous books in the series....more

I have been in love with Summer Rayne Oakes pages since I saw that YouTube video of her 600+ plants in her Brooklyn apartment. Now she has grown her indoor green space to 1100+ plants, teaches the world about all kinds of plants, advocates green fashion, and encourages people to care for the environment. She is truly an inspiration and so is this book. With such thought provoking questions like "is a tree still a tree once it's been chopped down for lumber?" My mind was racing throughout this entire book. I love my humble collection of 100+ plants in our home and this book made me love each of my plants so much more. She makes you think even deeper about the "weed" poking out from the cement in the sidewalk. This book took me back to the beginning of my plant journey when I bought my first plant that is still alive to this day. My beautiful red maranta that has suffered some abuse because of our kitten yet is still loving life. This was more than a book about plants. It's a book about seeing the world differently, making greater choices with less environmental impacts, and caring about others the way we care for plants. By learning how to love plants we can better love others as well as ourselves by not thinking about what they can offer us, but what we can offer them that fits their needs. Such a beautiful read. I can't get over how much I love this book....more
