I think I went into this book with the expectation that it was like a light cozy fantasy that would help me transition into a high fantasy reading phase but this lowk was high fantasy in itself :D like wat. I think around page 200 (in the ebook version) I started to realize the stakes were way higher than I signed up for and that the plot was a lot more political than I thought... (I don't really like political books) Like there was a whole glossary for this book like HUH. Like its still good because literally it cant be bad its about a girl growing up and figuring herself out and the platonic and romantic relationships are really fleshed out because that's what this whole book is about and it's why so many ppl love it and I do get it. I think I just wasn't in the mood for this type of fantasy which is really unfortunate because at another time this probably would've been fire. I think the ending saved it for me bc there was a HIGH chance I DNF this one bc around the 70% mark where her mother dies I kinda was like lmao this solves all your problems doesn't it girlie? I was really pleasantly surprised with how the book turned and set itself up for book 2 I think it's actually very genius and I'm lowk excited to read the next one when I'm feeling more pumped about it ig. Here's some things to remember ig before we go in to the 2nd one in case it takes me awhile to get to it - mother evil? wanted to be empress --> shes now going to be empress - book 2 is going to be about her building her own council (they need to love her and shes scared abt that) - I don't like the romance part so lowk I wouldn't mind if she switches up on the food LMAO - dayo is chill af he's super cool w ruling together and that makes him a home (I also think they're cousins LMAO) ...more
**spoiler alert** Ok this review is entirely for me. but holy fk was that good. i understand y booktok is obsessed w this frfr.
to recap in case i for**spoiler alert** Ok this review is entirely for me. but holy fk was that good. i understand y booktok is obsessed w this frfr.
to recap in case i forget by book 2 (which is literally getting released like exactly 2 months from now but u never know how one's memory can fail)
- our MC Violet is like super frail and was suppose to be in the Scribe Quadrant so shes hella smart - Violet's dad knew abt the rebellion and gifts her a book of "folklore" thats actually real sht lmao and honestly my theory is that he's alive - Violet's mother is an ass and i hate her bc shes the type to never approve of her daughter even when she lives up to all her expectations and more (also shes hiding like key info and has basically sentenced all her children to die) - Violet's sister Mira is a slay even tho she does not approve of Xaden, but she's a slay bc shes like a hella good older sister who gave her like incredible armors that helped her through sht
PLOT WISE
- THE TRAINING ARC FOR THIS IS SO SO GOOD and its actually SO FAST PACED i rly liked the pacing of this book fr like nothing was slow (would reread this j for the training arc bc that slayed SO HARD) - Parpet (aka death stone bridge thing) WAS SO FUN TO READ??? like i was literally so stressed out for her it felt so real. it was giving squid game the training games idk and i lowk love squid game in the sense that its really interesting to watch when everything is on the line. - The Gauntlet (rly intense training course) literally thought this was the end of her im ngl. girlie was rly debating be a scribe w this one and i dont blame her. shes resourceful af tho even tho watching that other girlie die right in front of her probs was not a slay at all. - to me this book is giving Ember in the Ashes meets The Serpent and the Wings of the Night and bc i read both of these the plot wasnt like OMG DIDNT C THAT COMING but more like ok i get it but Rebecca Yarros just did it better? Like it all followed standard high fantasy procedure, yet it was still enough for me to be like wow omg. - Ember in the Ashes bc its giving like enemies to lovers but high magic and the feeling that I really like the first book but might not like the rest of the series bc it gets too political vibes.... - Literally same could be said for The Serpent and the Wings of the Night but I genuinely feel like this book is p similar minus the fact that this one is about vampires. vv similar climax of the story where u realize the man she fell for is actually hiding sht for her for her own good and is why hes cagey the entire time. but imo Fourth Wing is like a nicer ver of it, The Serpent and the Wings of the Night is giving more like Cruel Prince and that's not my vibe fr. - its good over the traditional sense in that i could guess where it was going, but wasnt totally right. for example, I totally knew she was gonna connect to either the strongest or the weakest dragon, but i DID NOT think she would connect to both. also did not expect that her dragon and Xaden's would be mated pair. i still think its a bit much that Xaden cant go like 3 days without her, but like bros down bad ig. or his dragon is or both. - Tairn is actually my fav character i love him hes so silly. like i want the most powerful dragon in the quadrant to tell me silly quibs abt life thats so like wholesome??? im rly glad i predicted that sht i love him fr hes real. - bro the whole "love triangle" WASNT EVEN A LOVE TRIANGLE OK. like even tho i knew it was gonna be Xaden the entire time like i genuinely knew Dain didn't have a chance. did i wish he had a chance? hella ya. bc hes the nice boy that gets away. but the fact he was sooooo stickler for the rules was a massive turn off so i get it. hes giving hero trope, and Xaden is def villain trope. the type that they burn the entire world just for you, while a hero would never do that. but on the contrary, THE BETRAYAL FROM DAIN WAS SM WORSE FOR ME. like i knew Xaden would probs b doing smth sketchy, BUT DAIN?!!? the one that swore to always be by her side and protect her?!? bro. im p sure hes the vice commander in book 2, but idk (i think it would still be interesting if they hooked up once or smth lmao) - dood Xaden pov at the end was srsly giving some Divergent vibes i was abt to fking LOSE IT bc while im ok w Xaden dying (i had a theory that he would die and she would revive him and that was her power, but lightning is cool ig.) i am not ok w Violet dying. she is my girl i love her - BRO I DIDNT KNOW I WOULD GET SO AFFECTED BY LIAM'S DEATH?!?!? like wtf. shed like 2 tears over a fictional character fr. but its the fact hes always been so good to her, and was a genuine friend. - ok but the betrayal from Xaden was such an obvious move like DUH im just surprised they stationed him where they knew there were viven so that he would literally die. like Dain did that. fk off Dain. I like that Xaden is basically leading a revolution to help ppl tho. he literally only got punished bc his father was trying to show them all something that the gov was hiding, so honestly go him. i support Violet aiding in their efforts frfr. - so glad she killed jack tho he was highkey irrelevant and a pain in the ass - OH AND BRENNAN IS ALIVE AND THATS SO SLAY kinda guessed it when Xaden was being cagey abt the healer sht. i alr love brennan and ik like super minimal abt him. just know hes a good guy and has an epic ability. mending ppl sounds so cool.
Little Notes I have for myself bc y not - one thing that was kinda not slay (but maybe bc this is the first book ive read in like 3 months LMAO) is that there was a LOT of info and probs like a good 10% of description couldve been cut out. i also dont know why they explained Violet's hair so confusingly??? Like i literally had to search for fanart BYE. - middle of the book is kinda a blur, and honestly i only semi get y Xaden put them into a situationship. like bro j didnt trust her w his feelings or smth but thats so dumb bc theyre LITERALLY gonna b around each other for life. like bffr. - the whole we can read each other in our minds is hella cool tho. like seriously, thats soulmate sht.
My predictions for book 2 - unfortunately i def know we getting more political w this one, i just hope its not too much to the point im like goodbye! y would i care abt a fictional worlds politics more than i do irl like thats so silly. - dains probs the vice commander? if hes not that would b interesting af like wow new guy??? - Xaden and Violet r rn doing the enemies to lovers to strangers to friends to lovers but im p sure their endgame bc their dragons r mated, so honestly dont c us going the throne of glass route. unless by some miracle we showcase a new rider who is like op af and shes like bye Xaden lMAO.

Maybe it's because every single book of hers the love interest makes sure that their partner is understood. They're made for each other in the best way, and they fit perfectly. I can never imagine them being with anyone else, and together they are whole. I think that's why I cry every time. That and the immaculate humor displayed literally all throughout. I love her characters so much, even if they both are cynical and thinkers....more
