I got it as a gift, really loved it in the beginning since it¡¯s a classic, German version kept its old fashioned style. However, the content is problematic. It¡¯s from the kid¡¯s point of view to narrate and by third month of the pregnancy mom is still going to disco, drinking rum and gin, or even 5th month I don¡¯t even remember. The kid said if mom stays so at the third month pregnancy, the kid will decide not to stay. ¡ then kid stayed but 5th month still smoking. Denying is one of the easiest thing to do in the world, but to open eyes and see are difficult, to reflect as well.
Recommending this book for people who are entangled in parenthood repressive anger, feeling of un-feeling, etc....more

The quality of English translation then would not be the first priority. However, for a Nobel Prize winner, it is really a down point that English version is this simple and not exact.
It would be nice to have some footnote as well, explaining some of the points. I attended one of Herta M¨¹ller's events for collage poems, it was wonderful, but simply reading the English version would definitely sink the peal back into the sea. What a pity. ...more
