I was really excited because of the tropes and because I had never read a book with Pakistani rep and wanted to know more about the culture, and well I feel like I learned almost nothing!
But most of all the story felt awkward, from beginning to end. The characters were flat and read like teenagers and acted like them too! Honestly at times the 6 year old daughter felt more mature than both of them!
The whole plot of them getting engaged was absolutely ridiculous to me! The events that led to it felt very juvenile and immature, and in the end made no sense!
Azeer gave me whiplash for most of the book, given that in one sentence he was saying Alina was the devil and the next he would be praising her! I didn’t like their relationship because it was really contradictory, at times felt forced and they had zero chemistry whatsoever! There was no sexual tension and the banter was questionable at best, since most of the times it would be Azeer making misogynistic remarks!
Also the relationship between Alina and Zoha was really weird! Their first meeting is just odd and it felt like Alina was using Zoha to get Azeer to agree on building the daycare on his hotel but then this storyline is just dropped! And then suddenly Alina and Azeer are married and Zoha is instantly calling Alina “mama and Alina just takes on the maternal role, loving Zoha instantly like she was her own! It felt way too rushed and unnatural!
Also there was a lot of cursing in the book that was obnoxious, especially when they would curse in front of the six year old like it was ok! There’s a moment when Zoha calls someone the b word and Azeer praises her and even feels proud of her! I mean WHAT!?
Overall it was very disappointing, I didn’t like the writing, it felt very juvenile, and yes I know this is a debut but it felt like there were parts that weren’t even edited or fleshed out! It was confusing at times and the pacing was just off! I was bored throughout most of it and feel like it was waaaaay too long!...more
