in all honesty, this book angered me because really - if you don't pay close enough attention - you might walk away just thinking it was about a man waiting for a fish to give up. and for me ... IT KINDA WAS.
there were some parts where i found the writing poetic and profound and i liked the start of this ol' story but maybe i expected a little more out of it? because by the middle, i was very close to giving up because reading through 4 day's worth of a struggling old man with a huge fish is not my cup of interest.
anywho, i tried to find aspects of it to give a lenient rating but overall, it was another good jab at the classical realm of novels but did not leave me in much awe :/
fave classic. hands down. - - - hello, after realizing the short and unhelpful review i left above a couple minutes ago, i rushed back to write smth inforfave classic. hands down. - - - hello, after realizing the short and unhelpful review i left above a couple minutes ago, i rushed back to write smth informative that wouldn't just clutter up goodreads reviews
ok, well where do i start? i have never been a big fan of classics for their often confusing writing and seemingly pointless plot but i actually really enjoyed this story. fitzgerald really draws the reader in with the little details (and trust me they are very important in order to fully understand the story) and for me, i found the dialogue and story plot overall enjoyable.
what i found interesting straight off the bat was the choice of narrator. having carraway, neither rich nor poor and beign someone who lives a relatively drama-free life achieves a nuanced effect between west egg and east egg and the indulgent lives of the established wealthy buchanans and the self-made rich gatsby.
fitzgerald analyzes the differences in wealth and how they affect human relations; you're either someone eager to alliance yourself to become rich or perhaps you've passed that stage and you already are rich (congrats), or you are inherently rich. interestingly enough, gatsby is rich yet he isn't the happiest he could be and that, ladies and gents, brings us to the whole point of The Great Gatsby -- stinking rich isn't enough for he ultimately hopes to reunite with his past lover, daisy.
now this review isn't to summarize the story, but there's an interesting power play between the rich and whether gatsby can truly win back daisy's love. or..the better question..if daisy wants to go back to gatsby..
just too many thrills thinking about it ugh. it is truly a complex masterpiece all set in 1920s era of industrialization, into the lives of the rich, and into their lesser known lives of problematic love and loyalty
it's been a long time since i've wanted to dive straight into a book even after the most exhausting day so thank you Black for making this trilogy so it's been a long time since i've wanted to dive straight into a book even after the most exhausting day so thank you Black for making this trilogy so intriguing!!
(view spoiler)[ some of you geniuses are wondering why i gave this 4 stars if i liked it so much ohoho. well..i thought the plotline was pretty simple in ways and throughout all 3 of her books, it felt like a smooth, pretty uneventful ride until the last maybe 50 pages? and then bAM cliffhanger - right when i get excited about what will happen next - and then it goes back to a slow ride.. i love all the characters so much (especially Madoc, he was such a good antagonist) but imo, i don't think Black nailed the romance very well between Jude and Cardan. whyy...did Cardan suddenly have this burning hatred and love for Jude..he hid it for so many years and then Jude figures out that he has always had an interest in her?? also, the romance came out of nowhere, one minute they're planning about war and the next they're like making out so it was a little outta the blue lol. needless to say, it was still a very enjoyable book! lemme know what y'all think (hide spoiler)] ...more
