Radeva’s vibrant illustrations make this such an attractive, clear text, making what can be perceived as a tricky subject matter enticing and easier to understand. Lots of opportunities to develop skills in reading non-fiction are present, with footnotes, an appendix and a glossary to explore. Accompanied by a short history of how Darwin came to develop his theory, Radeva’s book would really encourage readers to be observant in noticing the differences within species and between living things, and ponder upon where and what form they initially began. Darwin’s own words are weaved throughout, making this a faithful retelling and keeping roots firmly planted in the original paper. What I particularly liked about this text is that it makes apparent areas where Darwin’s theory have moved on with new scientific developments, which I think really encourages readers that there is always more to discover....more

When the Queen of PA vibrant Iranian traditional tale which retells a part of the epic poem Shahnameh, a story that is at least a thousand years old. When the Queen of Perisa gives birth to a baby boy after years of being childless, he is rejected by his father, who perceives the baby's snow white hair to be sign of possible downfall to the throne. Outcast and sent into the mountains, baby Zal is saved by The Simorgh, a vast and beautiful phoenix capable of making dreams come true. Bringing the child into the family nest, Zal is nourished and loved for sixteen years, growing into a well educated young man under The Simorgh's care. One day, seized by regret, the King tracks down his lost son, and Zal must make a decision about his future. This is such an enjoyable tale, with much to consider with regards to knowledge, foresight and forgiveness. I would love to find out more about the original poem, which would definitely enrich the reading experience and would be really rewarding to do with children....more

Cloud Boy is told through the diary entries of Angie Moon, as she and her inseparable best friend Harry spend long days filled with play and cloud spotting. Interrupted by illness, Williams delves into the mind of a child coming to terms with a friend who is no longer able to live the life that they are used to. This is a story fraught with internal dilemma; trying to understand what a good friend should do and make a path through emotions and circumstances that are beyond control. Williams does well in depicting a narrator that is often in conflict with herself, her family and the reader. I found myself really emphathising with Angie and her often frustrating, understandble stream of thoughts and actions, as she tries to do what is right for herself and her friend. A story which should not be shyed away from with children who are capable of navigating a sensitive subject matter. Seeing illness through the eyes of another child is something that could really comfort young readers. Particularly thorough the fact that another person also sees the unfairness of the change and upset that comes with illness....more

This felt like a story of many types of bereavement, for the loss of her culture, the hope of reuniting with her father lost in war, and for the end of a childhood innocence tainted by events that no one would ever wish to experience. HÃ 's struggles to settle into a new way of life and break away from continual tanting in school are quite unsettling at times, depicted with such emotion and force that it becomes quite clear that Lai has walked through HÃ 's shoes herself. A stunning and insightful book which shows strength and comfort as being a wave that comes in different forms, and one that does not shy away from adults showing their low moments to their children....more
