Because I am reading Borges' 'Collected Fictions' chronologically, this is the first short story collection of his I have read.

This is basically two books - his first 8 stories which were in the first edition, which he disparages in his 1954 foreword, and the rest, which appear to have been written after he'd developed a bit more as a writer, and then added to subsequent editions.
First half - eh its entertaining... but not what I was expecting when I decided to give Borges a go. There were two that particularly stood out for me - the one about a heretical Persian prophet, and a retelling of the 47 Ronin legend. The rest were interesting but did not leave much of an impact, although I did like the prose and a few turns of phrase he used. 3/5
Second half ('etcetera') - Incredible, I'm hooked on Borges now! Was just intending on reading the first collection for now and returning to a book series I had briefly put aside, but now I'm going to read Ficciones as well. Every short story in this half is top notch. 5/5 ...more
