However, I didn't recall how the narrator (never named) ebbs more and more into ramblings rather than narration by the last 10% or so and I was quite ready for it to end. A biologist goes on an expedition into a remote and possibly dangerous piece of land known only as Area X. The other people on the journey are also known only as their specialties, the surveyor, the psychologist, the archeologist, etc. Slowly they all die but the mystery lies within the tower that stretches deep into the ground and the biologist only knows what's here and now.
