The story takes place in the noxious, poverty-stricken, crime-ridden cityscape of New Crobuzon, of which Perdido Street Station-- it's macabre monolith jutting above the squalor-- is the centerpiece. The story is a little slow going at first, as Mieville gradually introduces us to this world where criminals are Remade by having their limbs removed/transformed into those of other creatures with a method referred to as thaumaturgy, the magic used by some of the more talented denizens of New Crobuzon. (Just try forgetting the image of the Remade prostitute who's had her arms and legs replaced with those of a dog as she awkwardly moves about her room.) The Scar , which is apparently more of a sister-novel than a real sequel, as each of the books in the trilogy can be read independently and in any order....more
