I knew that the Nazi's forced blonde hair/blue eyed women from around Europe to become part of the Aryan way of life and produce children to follow in that legacy. However, I was unaware that Nazi's intruded on countries outside of Germany in search of children with blonde hair/blue eyes to train into the idea of becoming a "model German citizen"....even though the children that were taken from families were not Jewish, nor supporters of Hitler. Families of these children were taken to camps and often killed. Just another layer of Hitler's sick ideals.
This story reminded me of My Enemy's Cradle (but for intermediate grades). Loved the story line and how relatable the characters were. I can definitely see a lot of teaching coming from this story, and it’s a bonus that the author is a fourth grade teacher. Great story. ...more

I've always been fascinated by the Holocaust, but never knew this part of the Holocaust's history. This was very educational read for me, as well as an enjoyable one. The writing was beautiful, and I became invested in the characters within the first few chapters. This is definitely a book filled with history, but it's also much more than that-it's a love story, a survivor story, and a reminder to everyone how lucky we are to have our freedom...and I cried....more

This is right up there with the Book Thief for me! I am fascinated with any type of story that took place during the Holocaust period, anywhere in the world. This story was no exception. There were many twists I didn't see coming, and yet the author did a great job of foreshadowing many events that did take place. I can't begin to describe the romantic bond the author created between two of the characters. This is by far one of my favorite reads. ...more

I truly felt like I knew every character in this book and as the chapters changed from character to character, I could feel each one's emotions. This is a MUST READ! The snapshot Kathryn Stockett provided us with at the end of her life growing up in Mississippi just made the book even more sentimental and meaningful. SO GOOD!!...more

My heart ached through the majority of the story because I could not relate to the hardships of that time period. It made me thankful for my life and my upbringing. I feel like my eyes were open to a different perspective to those who lived in Germany during the years Hitler ruled. It confirmed my belief in the human race that there are good people out there, selfless people, who stand up for what they believe in, even if they are standing alone, even if they do not get acknowledged for what they have done. They do it just because it's morally right. This is my new favorite book! I encourage ANYONE to read this book!!...more
