It's very well written which I actually did not expect. Sometime things are a tiny bit hard to follow but overall it was an enjoyable experience. So far this is the novel about spies that feels the closest on how the spy trade was in the 50 and the 60s.. I will come back for more, but maybe not right away. I feel this is the kind of novels you don't want to read several of in a row.
One quick comment about the edition. It's the perfect size and I really like how the novels all have the author's name in big font on the side....more

I think this is my favorite. 1 year after a murder in a boarding school for girls, evidence comes to the forefront that restarts the investigation. Over the course of one day we follow 2 detectives in the school while at the same time we re-live the events of 1 year ago that led to the murder. It's well done, very psychological and the characters are superbly done, especially Holy. As I said this is my 5th Tana French novel and by now she is my favorite author of Psychological thriller. In each novel the most interesting part is not finding out who did it, but why. The fact in every of her story the detectives are different is a definite plus too....more

I read the whoI will not forget Patch and Saint, the pirate and the beekeeper, for a long time and it's hard to express how much I enjoyed this novel. I read the whole 580 pages in two reading sessions and I think the last time I did something like this I was a good 20 years younger. The story drew me in and each time I thought I was getting the hang of it and was starting to guess what would happen next, the author pulled a trick out his hat and we went into another direction. There's enough material in here to write 2 or 3 novels. It made me cry, it made me laugh, made me feel a whole lot which is the main reason I read novels. In term of style, the book is made of over 200 chapters which are mostly 1 or 2 pages long and I like this style a lot. It gives a faster pace to the story. This is only February but I can not see a world in which this wouldn't be one of my top 10 read of the year. I am looking forward to 10 years down the road when I have forgotten this and can re-read it....more

I had watched some of the movies but never read any of the books. I am glad I finally did and I plan to read a lot more of James Ellroy's production. For me it's really in the spirit of Chandler's writing but better. ( Chandler was the best for his time, but Ellroy has the benefit of 40 more years of Noir Litterature to inspire him). The novel is 300 pages or so, but so many things happen it feels like you are reading this huge 500+ pages book, and you can't stop turning pages. It was impossible for me to read this without picturing it, in my case it was Russel Crowe in L.A. Confidential and some of the cops in the Perry Mason reboot. Highly recommended and I am really glad Everyman library has been releasing a lot of Ellroy's production as I plan to buy them all (I read this as part of the L.A. quartet edition)....more

It's a little different from the typical nordic or american crime in the fact that the actions of the police are a lot more codified and defined by rules. There is no solo detective solving the case working on his home but a whole team. The name of the main characters take some time getting used to because once again they are not as familiar as English names. But once you make the effort you can differentiate them. The author does a good job at developing the characters and I felt like the novel was going crescendo and the second half was really good. ...more

Of all the crime writers I have read she is one of the best at writing literary psychological thrillers. The crime doesn't matter much, what matters is the state of mind of the detective and the suspects. Which is why every novel features a new detective so we are never in know territory among people we know.
