I have been struggling with this book for awhile now and finally finished in an airport because of a delayed flight. It seems I just could not get into the story but continued to push myself since it is considered such an influence on popular culture of almost 100 years ago.
The truth is, while I enjoy the writing style of this novel, it really is just a personal manifesto dressed up as a 'sexy dirty' book. DH Lawrence is all about hating the Industrial Revolution and basically crafts a scenario to push his viewpoint. It is a valid one but he scarfices character development to let his various characters expound on a world view. It was some beautiful passages and brings up some interesting ideas but Ayn Rand takes on the same goals but with much more effect.
That said, it is worth a read to see how popular ficition can be used as a gateway for personal adgenda....more

Im not sure if what was unique is enough to carry me through an eight book series.
I really do wish they double down on how she felt about killing because the introduction makes it feel like it doesn’t really bother her and I thought that was interesting and then they kind of walked it back. I did like the fact that there’s minorities represented in it but I also wish there was a clearer POV on the forces at play and how certain things worked. That said, the one thing that was really intriguing to me is the level of world building, particularly the mentions of random names or incidents from their past that felt like one offs but you could definitely expect to play out in the future. A lot of series don’t do that well and I appreciate that.
I think I’m going to give it a couple days and see how compelled I feel to keep moving with the series...more

The thing withWhile this book is written in intricate detail and is very well researched, it is the type of biography that I sometimes struggle with. The thing with the story of Jane Austen is the element of mystery There is so little we know about her by design of her estate. This type of biography makes leaps and bounds out of little pieces of information and that bothers me because those little leaps become facts to the uninformed. Just because her favorite color is pink doesn’t mean the portrait of her in a pink dress is a portrait of her and her favorite pink dress but that’s the type of logic that seems at play.
That being said there’s a lot of biographical information about the family that is interesting and you can definitely see how I could have Shed elements of story into her work. It’s not the first book I would recommend but it’s not the last one I would deny....more

So it’s kind of hard for me as someone who’s enjoyed the genre to read someone disparaging it the way that he does.
With that warning, it is a fascinating study of that window in Another World’s run and why he was able to be so incredibly good at it. As a writer he really speaks to the idea of personal history, class struggle, and ethnic issues in a way that most American writers don’t talk about. I’m glad I read it and I probably won’t think of him fondly but it is a very fascinating piece if you’re into understanding the world of the soap opera....more

I also struggle with unreliable narrators whose shaky POV is not due to plot or other motivations so I found I didn't trust which left it hard for me to care about almost anyone in the story. That said, it has some beautiful language and did at points really make me pause and think... I do believe if you are into American Southern fiction or a more masculine male humor then this could be up your alley. ...more

This book really made me think about what the LGBT owes the missing generation and how AIDS changes and moved so much of the rights movement. It is at times frustrating in its realism but because of that harshness the characters feel like real people with real stakes but aren't martyrs or lessons for the sake of the story. This is the kind of book I would have wanted to pass on to my parents when coming out. ...more

I really did enjoy this story from top to bottom even if I did get frustrated with some of the characters' poor choices--there is something wonderful about having something so unique for a young gay/bi/lesbian reader that isn't closeted or coming out or small town drama. I am very excited to read the spin-off about the sister's own adventures!...more
