And a double sadness for me, given the fact that I never rated one of Sanderson's books under 4 stars. Seriously? It is the apocalypse?? (Oh yeah, it may be.)
Maybe this book just suffers from that middle book syndrome. Maybe I felt annoyed because I had to learn ALL NEW CHARACTERS and that really annoys me. Sanderson ALWAYS expands books to include new characters, adn that is ifne and good, but to go an entire novel with minimal (or no) interaction to characters we grew into the last book (slightly reeks of Martin to me) is beyond frustrating.
I had no issue with Spensa. Her growth, though a bit in my face, was honest and recognizable. I loved when she realized that Cuna wasn't trying to be (view spoiler)[ creepy, but instead trying to smile, and not doing so hot (hide spoiler)].
But the biggest drawback, was that I was bored. After the first 20%, it felt like nothing was happening. Finally, the last 20% peaked my interest again.
It's not that I won't read the rest of the series, cause, you know, Sanderson. But I felt so disappointed.
Side note: Every time Winzik was described or talked, I had a visual image of the Captain Smek from Home. (Not the book, but the movie). I have no idea why....more

Kaufman and Kristoff can do no wrong. There are probably about 1000 other reviews that will tell you how amazing (in really nice terms) this book is. Kaufman and Kristoff can do no wrong. Whereas not as in depth (or should I just say, as long as!) as Stormlight series (and, honestly, this is a good thing!), the characters were lovely and fun to read. And that includes M-Bot. What can I say, I love AIs with a personality, and boy oh boy, does M-Bot have one.
Another good thing...no insta-love! Thank the gods above. Truthfully, Spensa just needs true friends, and spoiler alert, she does end up finding them.
I will say the "coward" refrain got a little old, but was trying to put myself in her shoes, not only someone who has heard this word flung at her since she was very. young, but also as a teenager, and Spensa has some serious issues going on. There was quite a bit of growth in her. Finally, I loved that she did, not always, but often, address when she made a mistake. Perhaps that "coward" issue rearing up, but still...it was nice....more

And for all the haters that think that Jazz is just a male version of Watney from the Martian, suck it. I think that is absolute baloney.
Jazz is rough around the edges, but that doesn't make her a dude. And she swears, which again, doesn't make her identical to another character that swears. When I first started reading the book, I could see, briefly, why people may think that. But within the first 4 chapters, or 10% of book, I think it's obvious that she's her own character.
It's a fun read, and although still, the science goes over my head at times, it's not written as a science book. And even Jazz has to ask people to dumb it down for her. Jazz is funny, hard, emotional, and bright and resourceful (and damn it, why is that bad? I wouldn't forgive Weir if he made a stupid main character).
I had a couple of favorite lines, but this one takes the cake: "Very few people get a chance to quantify how much their father loves them. But I did. The job should have taken forty-five minutes, but Dad spent three and a half hours on it. My father loves me 366 percent more than he loves anything else. Good to know."...more

I loved the first book and Doran and Solara. And enjoyed Kane and Cassy in the first book, but I just couldn't get into this book. I knew it wouldn't have Doran and Solara as the main characters but I was ok with that. However, the characters felt flat and the plot, although it "moved", still bored me. Or seemed over the top. I think I'll just go back and reread Starflight....more
4.5 stars. Wow! So many people reviewed this book as boring or slow, but I loved it. I want to go re-read it!
Update 4/19: So I spent some time finding4.5 stars. Wow! So many people reviewed this book as boring or slow, but I loved it. I want to go re-read it!
Update 4/19: So I spent some time finding reviews of people who said this book was racist, along other things. I honestly did not *ever* read the book this way. I went into the book without knowing there was all this controversy surrounding it, and looking back, I can't even see it. I can see how the skin marking *could* be off-setting or offensive to some, but the other issues? I didn't ever picture one group of people as one skin colour, and another as a different one. I read this book as a fantasy with groups of people who have biases (wrongly and rightly) against each other. I read the marking as a strange custom, that maybe I cannot understand, but as a created custom of an imagined group.
After reading different people's opinions of why *not* to read it, I did find Roth's response to these reviews of her book. I thought her responses made sense (and wasn't much different than what I thought), and her honestly about flaws and potentially being insensitive, refreshing....more
