I gotta admit I was surprised by how neatly all the pieces clicked together. Although this was super slow, I didn't particularly mind and thought of it as more of a contemporary personal drama with some mystery elements thrown into it. I liked it more than The Hunting Party by the same author - these two are pretty similar but I found this one to be better executed with more interesting and more relatable characters and more exciting setting.
The title and blurb are very misleading though - I would expect something completely different from a book called The Guest List with highlighted points such as the bridesmaid ruining her dress on purpose ( (view spoiler)[ which btw doesn't even really happen? At least Jules' reaction to the situation isn't really about the dress atm (hide spoiler)]). I thought this was gonna be more gossipy, but it turned out to be quite deep with some heavy topics being handled.
Overall, I really enjoyed ny experience with this book and it will possibly stay with me longer than expected. Would recommend as kind of a heavier contemporary meeting mystery....more

Ale jak už tu mnozí zmiňovali - autorčin styl je čtivý, skoro až kompulsivně, to jo, ale jde tím trochu sám proti sobě. To vysoké tempo se totiž dlouhodobě udržet nedá (skoro 400 stránek!)....more

...more

Reading this book, I was engaged and wanted to know what is going on and how it's gonna end. I enjoyed both Martina's and to an extent Anna's character. I also want to applaud the casual reveal of a character's bisexuality in this book that made me feel very seen but it also didn't make a big deal out of it. (But no to get your hopes up, it's only a minor character reavealing a past relationship with another character of the same gander. However, like I said, I thought it was done in a casual, normalizing way that I liked.)
Unfortunately, the more I think about it, the more I see some major flaws. The writing was so absurdly descriptive - there is a description of the family house that took FOREVER and served no purpose in plot besides maybe showing how wealthy they were but also, we kind of got that from everything else. and to expand on that, I feel like there was a lot of focus on things and events that were not that important, focus that was than missing from other events and characters. I can't really say anything more without spoilers.
There were some things I was genuinely surprised by so it's a decent mystery but it's sadly of the kind that makes sense while reading and then slowly falls apart once you know everything....more

She loves her job more than anything else and her entire purpose is to work in a convience store. However, as she faces more and more judgements from colleagues, friends, and other people, about being a 36-year-old, single, part-time store worker, she tries to figure out what to do or say to people to not seem weird and to be accepted. I enjoyed listening to this book, it gave me things to think about and it was deliciously weird and unexpected. It has a strong message of embracing yourself fully despite other people's disagreements which I appreciate a lot....more

Jackson explores the path leading from what seems like the opportunity of a lifetime to horrific abuse and the fallout of that. I felt for Enchanted so much. And I was so mad that a system like this is still upheld to this day. A system that allows powerful man to abuse women and then blames the abuse on them. But don't expect a book that's just preaching its morals to you. All of the thought-provoking stuff comes naturally from characters' voices. And the story itself is a damn good thriller with twists that you don't see coming but are foreseeable in hindsight....more

I really enjoyed this book! The story was interesting and it kept me guessing. I managed to kind of guess one or two of the twists but mostly I was just letting myself get carried away in the whole mystery.
(view spoiler)[ I was pretty impressed by the author's ability to from the very beginning hint at Zach being not trustworthy and I thouroughly enjoyed the slow uncovering of just how much he lied about everything. (hide spoiler)]
Unfortunately, I found the characters being poorly developped and I couldn't differentiate between them very well. They were all almost cartoonish in their portrayals without much nuance. I especially noticed this because I was listening to the audiobook and I sometimes wasn't sure whose chapter was I currently in - Lizzie's or Amanda's.
But ultimately I really liked the story and it was a great companion to making jewellery.
I really really liked this for the most part but sometimes it slipped heavily into education mode and it always brought me out of the story. 4.5 stars
I really really liked this for the most part but sometimes it slipped heavily into education mode and it always brought me out of the story. Some of the poems were just incredile, I need to find them in a text form to enjoy them again.
Michael was a great character and the poems he performed were my favourite parts of the book. I liked that his path through life had its bumps and terrible situations but ultimately it's very hopeful and ends in a good place.
This book explores sexuality, gender and racial identity and intersection of many marginalized identities. I think it does so carefully and with nuance without pretending to have definite answers for everything.
The audiobook is narrated by the author and is amazing, I would highly recommend it....more
