It follows the aftermath of the shooting and how it impacted Starr's life. She is called to be a witness in the trial, but threatened not to speak out. It also talks about how she felt split between two different lives because of the different persona's she felt she had to take on between home and school. It also brings attention to a topic often not written about that is being spoken a lot about right now. I thought that it was a really good book and well written. It really hits the readers emotionally and provokes a lot of thinking. This book is meant for high school aged students. This would be a good book to incorporate when discussing the political climate of today....more

The bird leads her to a friend with a purple marker, who has the same ability and they ride off on a bike that they created together. The illustration were really stunning and the story itself was so engaging. This is another wordless book, making it available to all elementary education ages. I think that it may be more fitting for upper elementary based on the illustrations, but can be applicable to all. It is helpful to have in a classroom because students can create their own narratives. ...more
