Two of the main characters are retired from a life of crime to the same small New Zealand town quite by accident. They are not a couple, and there's a sizeable age difference between them. They both are caught up in murder mystery where something is very fishy. They both employ the same gardener, and he's also caught up in it. It's a surprisingly long book, but the unraveling of the mystery is very satisfying. I want to read the next one when it comes out....more

I like the formula, but it's NOT original from book-to-book. This writer has tropes she is dedicated to. She clearly is pro waiting for marriage, she likes ridiculousness and whimsy, and her heroes are obsessed with their heroines from day one in an extreme way - they are loyal and devoted to the core of their being. Not that I'm complaining - who doesn't like a fairytale level of devotion? The hero and heroine are always equally powerful, though different. In this series, there is a new couple every book.
This one is about an undercover cop and the goblin king of singsong city. They foil an attempt at a very dangerous demon summoning. ...more

I think I got the first one for free in Audible Plus and liked it so much I've been buying the others with Audible credits. The audiobook voice acting is exceptionally good, too. I love the humor and heart in this series. I love how deeply you get to know the characters. Bad (very bad) things do happen, but the good guys usually win. Favorite characters almost always prevail. The setting is a game world (leveling up in various classes) that's medievalesque. A gaggle of young-ish people were magically transported from our world to this world over the span of years, scattered all about, perhaps because someone cast a big spell. These people are slowly fleshed out through the series, and I believe that they will intersect more and more as the series builds to the big fight that's likely coming toward the end. The main character in the first several books is mostly Erin, who accidentally becomes a magical inn keeper. She's an exuberant, high energy, positive, magnetic personality who draws all types of sentient creatures to her and starts enabling new collaborations and cross-species understanding. There are lots of fantasy creatures, including other species that are sapient and look fairly different from humans (often bipedal, but sometimes with scales, fur, extra eyes...all sorts). There's a lot of war and strategy sprinkled through the first several books. Erin is a chess prodigy who makes unlikely friends through that ability. There's a realness to the interpersonal writing - people aren't perfect, they make mistakes, they hold grudges. But there's a little something coating it that's a bit morality tale - that it can/could be better...Hope, I guess. There's a bit of humor, and a lot of heart. ...more
