I found this on a "books that will make you smile" list, but it was a very sad book about a woman who had a horrific childhood that left her physically, emotional, and socially damaged and was coming to terms with all her baggage at age 30. Sure, she makes progress, but there's nothing feel-good about this book. It's definitely a book club book, and by that I mean something I would never choose to read. I finished it, hoping for at least a satisfying happily ever after, and didn't even get that. Wasn't worth my time. ...more

Half Moon Hollow is a spin off series from the Jane Jameson series that comes before it. I recommend reading them in order - they are much funnier that way.
This one was about an ambivalent witch on a quest to find some family relics that will ensure her family's power for another century. So no pressure. The search brings her to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, where shoe meets the supernatural gang from the first series and develops a strong interest in her hunky next door neighbor. ...more

It took me a long time to finish this book. The beginning was slow to develop and seemed so silly, I doubted I would ever get into the story. Eventually, I did, though, and for about 2/3s of the novel, I thought it was fabulous - until the end, that is. There's a major cliff-hanger at the end, which I despise as a plot device. So my ratings went from 2 to 5 to 3 over the course of reading this book.

Ms. Miller aspires to the quirkiness of Janet Evanovich. She doesn't make it there, but Ms. Evanovich relies too heavily on formula, so maybe that's not so bad to fall short of that goal. I didn't love this protagonist outright. She was a little too new age-y and a bit cliched for my taste. I did grow to like the story by the end, though. This series has some promise if it sticks more to the paranormal elements and less to the obnoxious banter with her gay BFF. That banter just wasn't funny - it was depressing (because their lives were really rather depressing.) ...more

The criminal activity that came to light in book 2 is the focus of this volume: the kidnapping, rape, and torture of fae and half-fae females. Jane has grown in mastery of her powers and she's ready to be rid of Ryu for good. She's also got it bad for Anyan. She meets other half-fae and nearly sees the end of her hated enemy - until a very annoying plot twist. She also meets an "original" - one of the parents of all the fae races.

The stories are also shorter - even less time for character development. It comes off as cartoon-y. It's entertaining, but about as low-brow as you can get. Not that I don't still enjoy the silliness. It's a fun series, and a super fast read.

The first story by MaryJaniAn entertaining read, light and chick-lit romance in focus. I liked 3 of the 4 stories in this anthology, which ain't bad!
The first story by MaryJanice Davidson was very funny - I just wish she had saved the concept for a full-length novel so I could have gotten to know the characters better. The premise was a group home for magical creatures, including the faerie king's brother, his visiting sister, a werewolf, a couple humans, a dryad, a person enchanted into a car, and a half-giant mechanic.
The second story was about a fern faerie trying to save a glen from developers and ending up in love with him.
The third was about a tooth fairy, but I skipped that one because it irritated me.
The last one was about a half luna fairy/half human in Manhattan searching for her dad and falling in love with a fire fighter. It was the second best, in my opinion.

It's a well-written YA paranormal series about a half-demon, half-human princess who only recently learned of her powers. This installment starts with the 16 year old Fairy king showing up at her high school as an exchange student so he can spy on her. Turns out there's a prophecy that says she will destroy the whole underworld, and he wants to see if he thinks it's true. Nikki is also trying to figure out how to be with her shadow love interest (Michael, the servant assigned to her and a prince by blood) despite the very harsh punishment for co-mingling between shadows and demons. She also confirms that her best friend is training to become a demon slayer and that her former love interest, Chris, is a prophetic half dragon who doesn't even know it. Then she is summoned to the underworld where she has to stand before the council to defend herself regarding the prophesy. She comes across her old enemies Elizabeth and Kieran, and makes a new ally in princess Kassandra. She also learns a bit about demon law making and tries to think of some way she could influence change in the future. At least 2 attempts are made on her life, and Michael saves her both times, nearly losing his life for breaking the law, but also learning more about controlling and using his shadow powers....more

It's pretty good, if you like chick lit contemporary fantasy/paranormal romance. I'm talking to you - Queen Betsy fans. If you don't like the everyday girl chick lit vibe+vampires, you will hate this. I'm so-so on it. The writing is fine, but I'm not in love with the characters or story, so I stopped on page 105. I just checked, and my guess of who the bad guy will turn out to be is dead on, so it's not a very good mystery in the story line.

Book one was slow going for me, and this one seems no better after 4 chapters, so I give up. It's just about to delve into long-lost evil twin territory (who also happens to be the almost ex-wife of the heroine's boyfriend), and I'm suppressing my instinct to vomit, so no more for me. Stephanie Plum is hilarious as a bounty hunter, and the two guys Joe and Ranger (she can't decide between them) are hot, hot, hot. I love the Jersey burg she lives in and all the crazy characters in her life. This series is a consistantly light fun read, and the 16th installment is no exception. The protagonist is a woman, not a man, and the tone of the book is goofy chick-lit, not passionate romance. If you're really into Katie MacAlister, you might enjoy this book. I found it a bit too silly. When the two succubae booked a couple tickets to Egypt to randomly go searching for an ancient angel artifact to trade to save their fallen angel friend from the vampire queen, I set the book aside and didn't feel like coming back to it. I kind of liked the idea that the succubus is the result of both a vampire and a fallen angel using a woman in the same day (one for blood, the other for sex) - that was original, though a bit convoluted....more

It was very funny and had quite a bit of sexual tension, just like the Plum series, but introduces a new heroine, a baker named Lizzy who has a minor supernatural gift. The series is set up as a quest to find 7 artifacts, so expect at least 7 books. There's a lot of slapstick and juvenile humor, but it works. Carl the monkey and Wolf are also cross-over characters from the Plum series. There's a cast of zanny characters, and the mystery is not all that mysterious, but it's a fun, quick read. The climax is not nearly as violent as some of the Plum novels.
