It was more of a drudge than a pleasure. But I have never left any book undone unless it was truly and completely miserable - like the GOLDFINCH, which I had to stop reading to save my sanity.
The book was OK. Her lyrical and poetic language was what kept me reading. It moved me. But the plot could get confusing. At least it did for me. It did not move me. But it did move. The characters were interesting, but I did not feel close to them or like them a lot.
When I read a book, and its characters are people I want to know better, I want to keep reading. When the place and events are places and events I want to know about or experience, I want to keep reading. As I said earlier, I really didn’t want to keep reading. So this is a 3 for me. And it’s a generous three....more

II love love love Jack and his words that become poems. He is a student with whom I identify. A student like Jack reinforced my reasons for teaching. I had many students like Jack for my 35 years of teaching, but they became fewer and fewer and by year 35 it was time to retire. I don’t HATE THAT CAT. I love this book and the cats Jack immortalized in his poetry. I hope you do, too.
PS Read the poems in the back first to truly appreciate Jack’s comments about them. ...more

She’s not a big poetry lover. Decided to read it before giving it to her. I LOVED IT! Brought back memories of teaching poetry to 8th grade boys and girls. I used some of the poetry in the back of the book, which should be read first, as another reviewer recommended.
The young man writing the entries from the start of school to the end of the school year reminded me of my boys. His poetry about his dog Sky will be in my heart long after reading this book & writing this review. “I love that dog. ...more

This latest book tranReading a Louise Penny Book is like visiting an old friend with the promise of adventure and as much love as there is heartache. This latest book transported me back to Three Pines, and then ripped me from the arms of old friends into a world of conspiracy and hopelessness. It was slow and methodical at first, but towards the end I felt like I was on a runaway train that i knew must be saved by Armand.
Characters and events from previous books resurfaced, and having read the books, I knew immediately what was going on. Had I not read the books, Penny did an excellent job of bringing the reader up to date. My favorite characters live in 3 Pines, and I would have loved visiting with them more, but they were simply background in this story. ...more

But they were nothing that I will remember for years to come. In fact, as I write this review two weeks after I finished the book, I really am having a difficult time remembering how any of them ended. But I’m glad they did. It was a task to read this entire book of stories. It was not a pleasure. But as I said, I’m glad he has influenced two of our greatest writers and I’m wondering if he has influenced anyone in this modern era....more

The twins are a challenge, one being skeptical & untrusting. The other is more forgiving and understanding. I want to continue reading the series, but it’s not one of those things that I have to do. I will continue it, as soon as I finish a few more books. ...more
