The last 100 pages really took it in a different direction. It's not that I didn't like the book or anything, but overall when a book goes 100 pages past where you think it should have ended and nothing changes to make you rethink the previous 300 pages, something probably went wrong....more

This book took me forever to finish because I kept getting annoyed and stopping for weeks and weeks. My main problem was with Zuri, who is so negative and mean - mean to her favorite sister! - and doesn't have the Elizabeth Bennett sense of humor that is the key to the character's charm and endurance....more

It's also not really about abortion; Girls on the Verge handles the topic much more sensitively. (view spoiler)[This one... I kept thinking that Veronica was right not to be friends with Bailey. She kept thinking, well at least Bailey is the one here with me helping me, but it turns out that wasn't why she was on board so it doesn't really redeem all the terrible stuff she said and did. I kept thinking they were going to run out of money, right from the get go when Bailey decides to take her mom's exboyfriend's El Camino instead of her Camry. Gas is expensive! And then she blows a ton of money on junk food, and several hundred dollars at a strip club. And when they are running away I was like, where are your bags? Where is your money? But I guess they had them the whole time. And the whole deal with her boyfriend who fucked with their birth control so she would get pregnant... I couldn't ever find him funny. That's assault. He can't also be like a running gag. The tone of this book just doesn't work for me when the stakes are so high. Maybe it will work better as a movie? I don't know. (hide spoiler)]...more

I never really connected with the characters, though, and some parts felt a bit contrived. (view spoiler)[I wondered from the beginning why they were going to Mexico for an abortion side-effect drug rather than going to New Mexico for a safe, legal abortion - especially since they have to drive for hours either way. Then they do end up going to New Mexico anyway. If Mexico was closer that would have made more sense, but she doesn't even learn about abortion laws in New Mexico until after the drug doesn't work. I also doubted whether three teenage girls theater busking could make nearly $400 in an afternoon... I guess I don't know anything about it, it just seems like a lot of money. (hide spoiler)] I've started the other YA abortion book for 2019, and their plots sound very similar, so it will be interesting to compare....more

I fell asleep SEVERAL times reading this. It's quite long, but not a lot happens, and there is a lot of info dumping. I didn't find it as offensive as many reviewers, though, except moments when it is very ace-phobic (Sera thinks she is "incapabale of love" and like, dead inside, when she hasn't been sexually attracted to anyone). The society we see in this book is the patriarchal brown one and there is a bit of yearning from one character for the more free, white, society, but we don't really know anything about that country yet; there's still time for the series to do something different than play in racist stereotypes with non-terrestrial world-building. But this book was so dull, I don't think I will be reading that sequel....more
