I know lots of students read it in high school, but as an English teacher today I couldn't imagine doing it. Do the sins of the father punish the next generations? The story is interesting, but the constant description, bogged it down. I appreciate Hawthorne, enjoyed The Scarlet Letter, and do teach his short stories Rapaccini's Daughter and Dr. Heidegger's Experiment (both great October "mad scientist" stories), but this novel is more suited to American Literature scholars....more

This book is funny, charming, and has the best philatelic mystery since Charade (the movie with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn). I love the fact that is is told through the eyes of 11 year-old Flavia who doesn't get along with her sisters and has a seriously impressive vocabulary. Add to all of that, this is the author's first book--published at age 70! It is an adult book that is suitable for the young adult crowd. Or maybe it's a young adult book that is sophisticated enough for the adult crowd. Either way it is a great read. I'll be reading the rest of these....more

Cullen reveals the many women who have largely been forgotten who also dedicated their lives to this cause. I thought I knew this story, but I had never heard of Dorothy Horstmann. In my mind Sister Kenney was the only female fighter in this cause Horstmann's research paved the way to create the live vaccine, and her field work oversaw the 77 million person vaccine trial in the USSR that proved not only its safety, but its efficacy. Other women played vital roles in this fight who have been overlooked until this book. This story of brilliant, hardworking, researchers who fought tirelessly to create a world without polio is a heroic tale. It is also a very personal story to me. As the daughter of a polio survivor I saw first hand the cruelties of this disease years after its initial infection. One of my earliest memories is getting in the car with the family to go to William Penn Elementary school (and later the Highland Drive-in) to have a sugar cube with the Sabin vaccine in it. It was a momentous day in our lives. Thanks to Lynn Cullen for telling this story so well....more

I loved learning abut the career boost that it gave those great B actors, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Leslie Nielsen, Barbara Billingsley, and Peter Graves. In addition to the new stars it created. Judi DenThis is a wonderful book for actors and English teachers. I have loved her as an actor, but didn't realize how much Shakespeare she has done. Judi Dench has played multiple parts in multiple Shakespeare plays and remembers them all! Each play she's been in has a section where she goes through a wonderful summary of the play as she tells of her experiences in it. She dives deeply into the characters she played and shows you the work she goes through to give the performances she does. She tells many fun anecdotes about mishaps on stage, working with all the greats, and her own personal life. Truly Shakespeare has been the man who pays the rent in her life. Now excuse me; I need to go watch a bunch of her movies....more
