Fitz suffers so many things and sacrifices so much for the good of the kingdom and family. I suspected who the Elderlings are, and I do like being right. I am so glad I picked up this trilogy and will have no qualms choosing the next Robin Hobb trilogy in the world of the Elderlings. What's not to love? I got magic, animal companions, found family, and in the end, legendary mythical creatures!...more

I always feel a novella is like a snack between books in any series. They enhance the story, the characters, and the world. The 3 rd just keeps the momentum of the story going. I wish I had book 4 right now so that I could jump back into the world. One of the side characters we are introduced to in this book is now my favorite of all the sides. Cheeky saucy side characters that have me laughing out loud... Yes, thank you! A little comic relief in the dark moments is much appreciated. ...more

I can see where it gets compared a little to Red Rising due to the Ranking of the social classes... and the way common folk can have the opportunity to rise through the Dragon riding school... I can see why it may be compared to GoT due to... well Dragons, and the connection the riders have to them. Both of these comparisons also have in common with our book the palace intrigue and betrayal for a someone's own gain, and rise disguised as well meaning. I will continue to book 2....more

I loved the world building, and the magic system was pretty easy to understand. There are a lot of things going on, and many pieces moving on both sides. The Dominion is at war with the Hzorah Tribes. Magic is banned in Hzorah, and the Dominion still believes that their Wizard will return, renewing the true gifts, and return hope. The Hzorah only need to bend the knee and submit... The Hzorah will not submit without a fight. So much to unpack. I am looking forward to the 2nd book very much. ...more

Battles, preparing for battle... more battle, both gross & disgusting fight scenes, and not to mention... DRAGONS! Life is great for Tau, the kid wants family, home with "that girl with the smile", and not a life of a warrior... he's got a plan... then BAM! Something tragic changes everything and all the young man wants is Vengeance! Low born to rise! I love it, I'm here for it.
