1.5 stars.
Aw man, where do I start with this one?
I know that the big majority of people love this book. They cried and were heartbroken and it was the best thing they ever read and shit, but for me? It was just so boring. The characters were horrendous, if I wanted to read about the most useless, passive and boring narrator being in love with this attractive, golden god, dude with no personality, and when he does have one, he just turns to a selfish prick, I would reread Twilight. Seriously, can Patroclus be any more of a Bella?

The writing was mediocre, the author clearly knows her stuff, but the dialogues were often ridiculous, the pacing was off. This story NEVER seemed to end. Now I wonder: how the hell does an epic tale become such a bland, flat story?

Ok, confession time, I never read The Iliad. I am 90% sure I read The Odyssey twice in my school years, yup, blame it on my school to make us read the same book twice just years apart. I am, however, familiar with this story. I enjoy Greek mythology and I was all for this book and its premise. But it was just not for me.

My biggest problem with the book was the characters, like I said before, they were awful characters. Patroclus is portrayed from the beginning as this weak, bland guy who can't defend himself and, throughout the book, that never changes. He is one of the most passive characters I've ever read. He is there solely to admire every physical aspect of Achilles, damn this guy had a thing for homeboy's feet. Seriously Patroclus, we get it, Achilles's feet were soft and pink and smell amazing. I got the message, and I also got how golden his skin and hair and everything in him was. Guy's hot, noted. What drove me crazy was the fact that Achilles really was the sole reason of Patroclus's existence. Without him, he didn't know how to do anything, he didn't have a reason to live and I just, ugh, really? We are going there? The whole ''if he dies, I'll die too cause there's nothing for me after him'' speech? Ugh. Even though Achilles and Patroclus had zero chemistry (seriously how many times do these guys talk, like really talk, in this book?) Do I have to believe that this good for nothing kind of guy, with no personality whatsoever, is actually the most beloved person for the best of the greeks? For this demigod? I just can't buy into this relationship that happens to be the entire focus of this book. It's like the author takes for granted that we know this is a love story between them so why bother to actually develop a relationship?

Achilles, he had no personality either until almost the very end of this book and then he turns into this selfish, proud asshole that even though is letting everyone be killed and failing to notice how dumb his decision is, is still admired and revered by Patroclus... I just...this book is just so dumb sometimes.

Of the story I can't say much because nothing happens. Seriously, we spend years in places and there's nothing to further the plot, it's like we are just waiting for the call against Troy. It is so boring and in this time, there's never a change in these characters. To me, the 8 years old Patroclus is the same Patroclus at the end. I don't know if it is because the story is told in past tense or if it's definitely a mistake from the author, but it reads the same. Through Patroclus's childhood, adolescence and adulthood, the character and his views feel exactly the same, which is ridiculous. For example, when all their greeks companions are dying and Achilles refuses to fight, even though Patroclus knows it's the stupidest decision ever, he refuses to say something and act, so what do they do? They both just consider to maybe swim or play later that day... I repeat, this book can be so dumb.

I don't understand Thetis role in here and why was Achilles so devoted to hear her and always obey her. Why was Achilles the perfect son, I don't understand because they clearly had a lot of issues.

I can't really say more, because I would be criticizing the same things over and over. I had a lot of issues with this book, this book took me more than a month to read More than a month! A book that I was planning to finish in 4 days... It seemed like it would NEVER end. The prophecy said that Achilles would die shortly after Hector, you don't know how many times I was rooting for this dude to die so everything could end soon. JUST SOMEONE COULD PLEASE KILL HECTOR NOW.

Anyway, if you liked this book, and judging by the ratings and reviews everyone and their mother loved this book, good for you! I personally had one of the most boring and frustrating experiences reading this. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the Iliad, but I sincerely doubt it. That being said, the only thing and character I truly enjoyed was Odysseus. You go, Odysseus. You da best Odysseus!

heyy glad it made you laugh a bit, hope you like it better than I did, thanks for the comment :)

Kathy Browning I went into this book with high expectations because I had seen it on so many book lists. I struggled reading it and agree with your review 100%!

DinosaursAtWork Hahaha I really enjoyed this book and hated Odysseus :D

message 155: by its_av (new) - rated it 5 stars

its_av I hear you and your opinion is valid. You make some very good points, especially with the lack of chemistry between them. I don’t know if it’s just me but I connected with the characters a lot. I myself am queer and throughout the book just seeking a mother’s validation is something so hard to even describe (my mother is very homophobic). So I guess for me at the end when she accepted, it was like a dream come true for me.

message 156: by Sixteen (new) - added it

Sixteen valid, all your points make sense, especially about the feet part lol

That's beautiful, and I'm glad you got to connect with the book that way :)

Elva Martinez I felt the same way about it dragging on and on. 🥱

message 159: by Angela (new) - rated it 3 stars

Angela You are sooo right about Patroclus being gah-gah over Achilles' feet! LOL LOL. I enjoyed the story perhaps a bit more than you did, but you're also right about the dragging on of the love story aka mostly Patroclus' drooling about Achilles.

message 160: by Matthias (new)

Matthias Dearstyne You hit all of my main issues with this book. Zero chemistry and zero personality, and it took me almost a month to make it through the book. I will say, for me anyway, the last maybe quarter of the book were what brought it up to a 3 star from a 1 for me. The way the book spends so much time focusing on how amazing Achilles is makes sense when you can see it as Patroclus sharing his memories of Achilles to make him more than just a legendary hero. I still don't find it romantic, it's more just a tragedy for Patroclus being so devoted in love to someone who doesn't reciprocate it and in my opinion didn't deserve it. And there was a few moment I felt foreshadowed or touched on the fact that Achilles wouldn't be remembered as a hero if it wasn't for Patroclus, he'd be hated for abandoning the Greeks, which I thought made it more emotional. I don't know, the ending was the only really good part for me

message 161: by Morgus (new)

Morgus Unlikely THANK YOU, that is exactly how I feel towards this book.

message 162: by Amber (new) - rated it 2 stars

Amber Yeah nah. Soooo overhyped. I’m shocked at the high rating. It’s such a solid 3/5.

message 163: by dazeddelir1um (new) - added it

dazeddelir1um Yes!!! When I was first reading this book I loved it. But after page 115 or so it gets so bland and boring I STILL HAVENT FINISHED IT!!!!

Krisha this is literally the best review i’ve ever seen on the app. i’m at page 279, expecting for something to finally happen but NOPE. Still as flat as the first few chapters. This is fine for a normal book but for a book that should be “captivating and tense and not to mention “one of the best sellers of our time, a must read? nah

message 165: by Allison (new) - added it

Allison Green I have not yet finished this book, but a million times yes. I have lost steam because of how unbelievable this romance is. There is zero evidence in the characterization of this book that would supports the storyline.

message 166: by Maura (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maura Tyson I agree about how bad the characters were. I felt like the only thing I knew about Achilles was what his feet smelled like HAHA

message 167: by Ava (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ava Bergström You said that Patroclus was portrayed as weak, but he wasn’t, at all. Really he fought in Achilles armor to save his reputation. (Made me mad that he had to do it and Achilles couldn’t do it on his own though) He was a super good healer or whatever you call it, they mentioned in the book that he was big and muscular. So in that aspect I don’t agree with you.
And the feet thing, in Ancient Greece taking care of your feet and just feet in general was a beautiful thing (correct me if I’m wrong). In today’s society it is weird and I agree with that. The first time I saw it I was like: Whaaaat but it was a great way to set the scene in my opinion.
And you mentioned how Patroclus was there solely for Achilles existence, isn’t that love in a way? I thought that was pretty beautiful, and also didn’t Achilles basically let himself die after Patroclus did? He fought off a god and the enemy all because of him. Safe to say their love wasn’t one sided lol. I respect your opinion though, since we all have different tastes in books! And I agree, Odysseus was the best caracter, easy.

message 168: by thi (new) - added it

thi Don't agree lol, i respect u tho... I really enjoy the book, I'm halfway through it, and it's rlly good actually... I like the relationship they both had, and the main topic of the book is literally their relationship and the war... I don't get ur point here, but okay. And yes, I agree w some characters being bad and stuff, but patroclus is my fav character 😅 because he's kind and empathetic (although this might be bad for him smtimes) I rlly like his character. Idk what to say abt achilles, but he's neutral for me. Idk, i like how the author focus on the descriptions of patroclus pov abt his lover, and the poetic atmosphere, it may be boring for sm ppl, but not for me, it's pretty. That's all I have to say.

Erin just reading The way I was cackling reading this review. I always had an instinct to avoid this book for some reason. Maybe it’s the hype.. maybe it’s my obsession with Greek mythology. Does anyone know an actual good Greek mythology fiction? I’m starting to doubt them all. Neon gods didn’t hit for me either lol.

message 170: by Maria (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maria Well, at least they had sex out of their bucket list so there wasn’t sexual frustration left to top it off!

message 171: by Amelia (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amelia Seriously, can Patroclus be any more of a Bella?
OMG! I am dying. That is the best description I've read for his character.

Juliana Meding Lmao yes to this whole review 😂

message 173: by Kassie (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kassie Aragon It wasn’t furfilling for me either. Sad that the last 150 pages were where the story really became good. I’m glad it wasn’t just me who felt this way. I was really upset about the way this book played out. There just wasn’t enough to the story line to make me fall for the characters

Megan Leigh Completely agree with all of this!! I just wasted an entire day reading this hoping to feel the “spark everyone else felt. When I had 100 pages left I read as fast as I possibly could to just end it. I felt too committed to just stop 😂 So glad I got this for free on Amazon instead of paying for it, because I would be livid.

3.141592653 M lmao i liked this book when I was in grade 8 but now i totally agree with you

Earthling A. I couldn't even finish this book due to it being soo very much boring. I could have pushed myself to the end of it all but you know what, I was thinking to myself why should I waste more of my time reading a book (which is voluntarily by the way) which I don't even enjoy. I don't know how long I took to get a bit more than half way through, probably weeks or months. I don't even remember.
Now that you have pointed out the things you disliked about the book I can utterly resonate with what you have listed above as critique.

message 177: by Ciara (new)

Ciara Richards Ugh yea. It’s taken me months to work and finish this book too. I love love love Greek mythology and every moment of SOA just is a struggle to get through. I know this whole story. Yet, it just frustrates me to no end. Your review is music to my ears because I was starting to think I was the only naysayer

message 178: by Elyssa (new) - rated it 1 star

Elyssa McMaster Patroclus is a Bella down to the clumsiness. Strongly agree with the points made in this critique. I was horribly disappointed in the book.

vvalequalle I think it wasn’t supposed to be like a modern story, if you read ‘Romeo and Juliet you can see there are many similarities.
The characters behaviours are based on old thinking about love. Also if you read the novel ‘Iphigenie on Tauris you will notice that many things in the script are dramatically and exaggerated written.
I think this book was beautifully expressed on the standards of this type of writing.

bre🫶🏽 the feet part omg😭😂

message 181: by Cait (new) - added it

Cait Nothing I can add here except support. I keep hoping massively popular books will be worth the hype. I have never not been disappointed. *sigh* DNF'ed.

Andrea S I was so excited to read it but I'm hardly halfway through and I'm ready to donate it. I never not finish a book but I'm more than happy to let this one go.

message 183: by Weezy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Weezy Aw man, where do I start with this one?

You should start by reading the Iliad before writing a review like this. This is a retelling and those characters weren’t created by this author.

Brittany Lyda I listened to the audiobook so many times I found myself drifting away to be like oops I missed something. But the story didn't seem to move forward even when that happened. I found it so boring I forced myself to finish it unfortunately cuz everyone seems to love it!! If I were actually reading it, it would have been a dnf

message 185: by SG (new) - rated it 1 star

SG I though I was missing something but now I see that there are others like me out there. Dude’s entire personality is being unhealthily obsessed with Achilles, who himself has the personality of a wet paper bag.

Martina:) Couldn't agree more

Raul Zavaleta You expressed my feelings exactly.

message 190: by Mary (new) - rated it 1 star

Mary Wheeler I wish I had read this review before I wasted my time on reading the story. But, alas, I did not! Ho hum what a boring story it was…thankfully I didn’t put much more time in reading and ended it with the knowledge of what happens to Achilles from other Greek tragedies.

message 191: by G (new) - rated it 2 stars

G Carlo Absolutely agree with this. I’m a huge fan of the Iliad and was majorly let down by this book. Completely changed the relationship dynamic from the sort that transcends soul and time into a YA fanfiction.

Elizabeth Brown All I can say is “ditto. Utterly boring

message 193: by Nicole (new) - rated it 2 stars

Nicole Anthony Agreed. Wondering if I should even finish it.

message 194: by Susi (new) - rated it 1 star

message 196: by Saintly (new) - rated it 1 star

Saintly Crasian Agreed, I was waiting for the end of Hector to be done with this book because Im not a quitter. But it took me almost 5 weeks to start and end this novel.

Angela chatman I agree 100%

message 198: by erebus (new) - rated it 4 stars

Azaria Bell You’ve put to words every thought I had on this book. To be bluntly honest, Patroclus was a bland, pathetic character. It took me 3 months to get through this. I should have quit earlier on but I was hoping for the incredible ending everyone had spoken about!
