I am rating this as the Middle Grade it is classified as... although the writing is solid, very little in this story is anything that would hold a 7-11 year old's attention, and the happenings in the back-half of the book are too mature in nature for a MG age reader to properly grasp. I know most Middle Grade age readers are worriers, especially about the safety of family, and I think the storyline would add to that anxiety. I would not have wanted my son to read this at MG readership age. Plus, most of the '70s pop culture references were pretty much esoteric and would not be understood, nor interesting, to a 7-11 year old. This book would be better rewritten as an adult fictional memoir. I know MG books of this nature can be successfully written because I read one about a young girl's life in the late '60s not too long ago, and I rated it five stars.

"Is this a Middle Grade? I thought this was a MG? It is another book about a 4th grader... um, hey, hello, 4th graders are elementary students. Besides that no MG reader, or most YA readers wiuld want to read this book because it is written like an Adult memoir. This book should be revamped with a few more big words sprinkled in and the swear words included (instead of saying "I can't repeat what 'so and so' said)."

Well, there was a continuity problem. Her mother says,"When I was your age..." and then talks about a time when she was in 4th grade, but tbe MC is in 6th grade, so it is an MG. Where was the editor, or the beta readers for the matter?
I felt the same way. I'm glad to see they re-released it as Adult Fiction because it was a solid story just not for middle graders.
I felt the SAME. We haven’t finished it, but I’m increasingly uncomfortable with how things are progressing. My 7&9 readers can handle heavy stuff and we read a lot of middle grade, but this book is WAY too heavy. I wish they had divulged more about that in the summaries, as I think it’s a great book for much older, or for kids dealing with specific circumstances similar. There’s so much in it that I’d like to discuss with my own book club. It feels more YA and less middle grade to me.
