it was amazing
bookshelves: favorites

I would give this ten stars if I could, five from me and five from my 12-year-old daughter, who said after reading almost all of it on one sitting, "that's my life." Life changing for her to read about someone so like herself and in a book so artfully written and drawn.

Dave Schaafsma I have to say: I have read this review a couple times since you have posted it, and other things you posted on FB about her reading it, and it makes me smile every time. Yay! And it's up for best graphic "novel" for the year on GR, too!

Anne Jordan-Baker Makes me smile, too. I've never seen anything get to Zoe like this.

Dave Schaafsma Well, as a teacher (and parent), that sort of response gets me going: How do I feed that flame? But you know, the smile is also just about having found that special book you know she will never forget. Another book that is pretty cool (but that she will not quite relate to, obviously) is Cece Bell's Ed Deafo. Get that one.

Dave Schaafsma Here's a couple more, that she may be interested in: Pedro and Me (the first MTV Real World, where a straight cartoonist nerd rooms with a guy he discovers is gay and is HIV-Positive but not sure how much of that is known beforehand it's not THAT great, to me, but it is a pretty profound story); Skim, by Mariko T? (again, spoilers: a shy Asian girl in a boarding school? has a couple friends, is kinda punk? and develops a crush on her female teacher)

Dave Schaafsma Mariko Tomei, I think. Her new book is This One Summer, which is about a friendship between two girls, sweet Wandering Son is a series, YA, by Shimura Takako about a girl who sorta wants to be a boy who is friends with a boy who sorta wants to be a girl This is for you to check out first, but if she liked Tomboy, I am so bold as to presume these identity issues might interest her, not suggesting anything, of course. Just one of those computer things: "If you are interested in Tomboy, you might try" :)

Anne Jordan-Baker Thank you, Dave! I'll check all of these out.
