it was amazing
bookshelves: comics-graphic-novels-mangas, home-library, 2014, absolute-favourites, urban-fantasy, fantasy
Read 2 times. Last read December 7, 2014.

This will be a review for both issue 1 and the edition comprising issues 1 to 5 (yeah I'm lazy I know).

I hardly ever read comics. Not that I dislike them, it's just that I don't usually like the artwork very much. Then I discovered The Wicked + The Divine.

The artwork is amazing. The colours are incredible. I'm not very familiar with the world of comics and graphic novels but I've never seen anything quite like this before. Beautiful. And hypnotizing. I could browse the issues for hours, just looking at the artwork.

This comic deserves five stars just because of its illustrations.

The great thing is, the story is pretty fantastic too!
Every 90 years or so, twelve gods incarnate in the bodies of the young. They are loved. They are hated. They are brilliant. Within two years, they’re dead.
Urban fantasy, mythology, fantasy, mystery, action The Wicked + The Divine pretty much has it all. It's all a bit confusing at first, mainly because it's difficult to understand what god each character is supposed to be. Strangely enough, it didn't bother me much and it all gets much clearer as the story develops anyway. The plot is very original, intriguing and fast-paced, with an unexpected twist at the end of issue 5 (view spoiler). Fun, fun fun!

Brilliant artwork + great, entertaining plot = I am hooked. Next please!

Eilonwy This sounds great! And I've been looking for a new comic fix. I'll check this out.

It is fun! And, yeah totally agree: deserves to be read for the illustrations! Aww thank you ^^

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) @Holly: do it, this is fantastic!

@Lola: you've very welcome, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!:)

message 4: by Lea (new) - added it

Lea Huh. I have an ARC of this one. Unfortunately, my e-reader doesn't do colors so I'd have to read it on the computer... Ugh.

I don't usually read comic books (not because I don't like them. actually, I have no idea why I don't :/. They never called to me I guess.) but your review made me really want to pick this one up :).

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) @Lea: I tried reading a comic on my Kindle on but didn't like it at all. And I don't really like reading them on my computer either. I enjoy the paper editions a lot more:)

@David: thanks! You should definitely read this one, it's fantastic:)

@Vicky: I don't usually read comics either. No particular reason, just like you;) This one is really worth it though. The artwork and colours alone are amazing:)

Eilonwy I just picked this up today! And of course, I had to start reading it. So far, so good ...

That's great Holly! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!:)

Eilonwy I bought Issue 6 today!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) So jealous!! It's not yet available here *sobs* I could download it on my Kindle but I hate reading comics in ebook format:( I'll just have to wait until the paper version is released in publishing black hole of a country;)

Eilonwy It was good! But it feels different from the first five. And now I've got to wait a whole month for Issue 7, so I'm barely ahead of you. I should never start any comic until it's all done!

I can definitely see that reading comics on a Kindle would kind of suck. :(

Elena Young Nefarious One is ❤️

(view spoiler)

I finally got my hands on the first issue - the italian publisher is doing a sale of the first five volumes, so I snatched them all (duh!) hoping it would help me get out of this tedious and most untimely reading slump (it just had to happen now that I could spend my day at the beach reading, which is the most awesome of all the awesomest scenarios ever, riiight? *shakes fists at the universe*). The first issue was super cool and confusing as hell, but I'm intrigued! Did you ever finish the series?

Did you just insult me, Child? I mean, I'm not sure, but I'm fairly certain being called a (view spoiler).

The artwork for this series is downright amazing. Probably the the most gorgeous I've ever come across. The premise is very cool as well. And yet, I never got past vol. 2. I can't quite remember why now, but I think it had to do with the story not really holding my interest. It's funny you should read it now, because I've been thinking of giving vol. 3 a try for a while, and added it to my Comixology wishlist last month:)

P.S. Serves you right for having the time to go to the beach 😬. You must have been really, really nefarious in your previous life for the universe to get back at you like that.

It's an enjoyable read and the authors seem like great guys but yeah, I admit I was expecting a bit more from it, going by the series' overall stellar ratings. I've read up to vol.5 which is the beginning of the second narrative arc, and it gets more intriguing from there, though.

I like the art too (hard not to, when every character is so ridiculously good looking!) but I've shown you the manga I read, I usually lean more towards stuff that has a less... mmm... slick? art style. Still, I'm glad I got the chance to finally read the series, it did its job and help me out of my reading slump 😁

Rub it in, why won't you. When it's so clearly my nefarious legacy's fault 😤

Up to vol. 5? Wow. Most impressed I am 😬. Have you read any of the themed single issues like The Wicked + The Divine 1831 or The Wicked + The Divine: 455 AD? They're supposed to be pretty good.

The problem with graphic novels with such high-impact artwork is that the story usually ends up feeling secondary somehow. I didn't know that the arc changed after vol. 5, so color me intrigued and stuff.

P.S. I deeply apologize about the nefarious legacy I burdened you with, Child. If it makes you feel any better, I'd rather be in a reading slump at the beach than at work with no time to read at all. Here's hoping this brightens your day! 😁

EEEEH?! I had no idea there were extra stories set in the past, how cool! Thanks for the heads up, Nefarious One 😊 (looks like there are other two besides those you mentioned: The Wicked + The Divine: 1923 & The Wicked + The Divine: 1373. Let me know if you're (view spoiler)

I stopped at vol.5 because the series is still currently being translated in Italian and book #6 isn't out yet (the price, on sale or not, is much more affordable than the English edition for the series, soooo) but yeah, I think the story is heading in an interesting direction 😉

Mmm. Fair enough! Although I should mention that for all my bragging about beaches, I've actually yet to see a grain on sand, something always comes up as soon as the thought of going to the beach forms in my mind 😂 But tomorrow... tomorrow is the dayyyyyy!!! (🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻)

I've been hesitant about picking up the series again, but all those separate issues seem cool and they have pretty good ratings too (except from the Christmas one I think), so I was definitely thinking of reading them. I shall let you know when I finally decide/find time to pick them up. (view spoiler).

How much money are you getting from the publisher to make me go back to this series? Just wondering.
