5+++ Marriage of convenience Stars!
"Rest my love . I'm watching over you."
What's it about? The Devil in the Winter is really a story about the most innocent and pure of London's wallflowers bringing a most ireputable rake to his knees. It is the story of two people so desperate to find love in a very jaded world, who discover that they're even more desperate to give love in return.
The most charming and most seductive of rakes, Sebastian St. Vincent loves women. And loves loving them. He loves fine things and he loves them in excess. He is confident and sexy and much like a tiger on the hunt. And he's about to run out of money. He needs a rich wife... and fast.
Evie Jenner is an orphan living with cruel relatives, who regularly starve and abuse her. Intent on getting their mitts on her inheritance however, they are determined she marry her disgusting first cousin. She is timid and shy, innocent and delicate. And... she needs the legal protection of a husband... and fast.
In the middle of the night she escapes and runs towards St Vincent's doorstep with a proposal of marriage.
The best bits: I absolutely devoured this book. It was so romantic and passionate and ... just beautiful amidst the snow and rain and harsh wind of winter, and the warmth and fire of the love developing between the two central characters.
I loved Sebastian so much! His rakish nature contrasted with Evie's wonderful innocence so well. Their romance personified the old saying that "opposites attract". But despite their reputations, they really saw the best in each other. She was the sweetest, most decent woman he'd ever had anything to do with, and he was the most caring and gentle protector she'd ever known (much to everyone's surprise, especially St Vincent himself).
Kleypas' humour shone through once again... the shaving scene was one of my favourites, not to mention the actual wedding, as well as the wedding night.
The worst bit; I don't think these books can be read as stand alone books. They should be read in order as many of the storylines weave in and out of each narrative. (I tend to see the four books as one long novel in four parts.) But it's so worth the read. I have loved all three so far, but this is my favourite because the characters seem so real, so layered, so tortured, and perhaps the most loving of all.
Recommended for: Fans of historical romance. This is one of the best! An absolutely gorgeous read. Loved it!
