Bev Part of the reason I picked this book up was due to the fact that it won the Pulitzer and I had read 'Housekeeping' years ago and loved it. However, I have mixed feelings on this epistolary novel.

I loved the idea of John Ames, an elderly preacher in failing health, writing to his young son to pass on his stories, wisdom, self-doubts, etc. before he dies. Robinson's writing is great and I loved the old stories about John's abolitionist grandfather and his peaceful preacher father. I followed the on-going tale of John's godson, Jack, with relish. But every time the Rev started in on his religious/philosophical debates with himself I found my self zoning out and having to chose between re-reading long passages or just skipping them totally. For that reason I could only give this prize winner 3 stars.
