If you are keeping a running tally if Dean Koontz novels with a golden retriever in them, add another hash mark for Odd Hours.

I continue to enjoy the Odd series, but my one complaint is that the pacing, the story, the motivations, the progress, etc. all feel a bit flat. Things are never a 10, they are never a 1, they are always just at 5 or 6. This is interesting because there is some stuff that happens that should be very intense, but it isn't. Some of this may be caused by the characterization of Odd (who has never seemed all that plussed in even the strangest and most intense situations since book one).

Also, I cannot tell if he gets into odd situations because of his name, or if his name is Odd because of the situations he gets into. He is just always dealing with the weirdest stuff!

In summary, if you have read and enjoyed up through Brother Odd, keep on trucking with Odd Hours. But, don't expect much difference in the feel of the story (which may please some of you).

Nick Borrelli I've been wondering about this series. I must have picked up the first book and held it in my hands at least five times but never pulled the trigger. What are your thoughts so far on the series? Is it worth investing time in? Koontz kind of runs hot and cold with me. I love some of his stuff, but others were pretty bad.

The series is good - but it has a very unique style of writing (mainly the inner monologue that Koontz gives the title character) that may not appeal to all. Also, I have seen where some people love certain entries in this series and they absolutely hate others. So far, I have enjoyed each pretty well - I think the second was my favorite.

Nick Borrelli Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll probably just give it a go. I've heard good things from people I respect. I just like to have as many opinions as possible before I dive into such a long series. thanks again, I appreciate it.

Shawn Deal Nick by all means read this series. The first of the series is one of the strongest books of the series. I looked forward to each book. This is some of the best stuff Dean has written in the last decade or so.

Briar I think it's a series that you have to read without any expectations. Not of how the story moves, or about what the characters should or shouldn't do. If you can do that, it's one of the best stories you'll ever read.

Jess ❈Harbinger of Blood-Soaked Rainbows❈ I own the first three of this series. I have had the first one in my hands several times but never read it yet. I'm hoping to get to it soon.

Ginger So what's he up too now? 10 golden retrievers? I've read so many Dean Koontz books with a dog in it. I'll have to give this series a shot!

Matthew So many golden retrievers!

Cody | CodysBookshelf I feel the same as you about the Odd books. Odd Thomas will never be one of my favorite Koontz creations.

Agreed - while the tone stays the same from book to book, you never know what to expect. Just go with it!

The first two were definitely very good - not 100% sure about how I feel about where things are going with the last two, but it still has my interest, so I will keep on going!

At this point, I am thinking I liked his Frankenstein series better.

Rachael I stopped after Brother odd, I think I kept reading them for the mentions of Elvis. For some reason the King popping up always made me laugh.

Rachael You've piqued my interest now!

Terris This is a fun series!

Jen Don't forget the children and aliens. They pop up almost as much as the goldens!

Oh, for sure! Makes it hard to remember which book some things happened in!

Corey Good series, I still have 2 books left, but I'm kind of taking a break because I was kind of disappointed the last one I read, Odd Apocalypse.

I am enjoying it so far - not blowing me away . . . but enough to keep me reading!

Corey Right.

Jessica I really love Odd Thomas. I love his purity of soul, his sense of humor, his devotion to his soulmate Stormy Llewellyn, and how he approaches all the crazy things thrown at him including those who have passed on and seek his assistance from the other side. He's unique in a world flooded with hyper macho Male Hero types. I love that he isn't at all like that sort of hero but still a major savior of the world.

I really like him in the book after this one - took me back to the feel of the first two books. I always miss Stormy!

Alondra Miller Dean Koontz became hit or miss for me after he dropped the 'R' and added a toupee. Since then, I no longer get creeped out and squeal with delight at his stories. I think his Frankenstein series really harkens back to the old Koontz. Of course, book 4 kinda sucked; but otherwise, the series is pretty cool. :)

I agree that Frankenstein series is pretty good and creepy!
