This is an exciting and heartfelt story about a strong girl and her younger siblings who are 鈥渙n their own鈥 when they鈥檙e apparently abandoned by their mother. I鈥檝e always loved tales of kids left on their own (see A Long Way To Go, etc.) and this is a particularly good book with a compelling main character.

Hilary I've just ordered this one, they both sound like they could be the one I was thinking of, but I thought I remembered chatting with you about it but can't see any comments on either yours or mine. Anyway this sounds good!

Hilary, I absolutely love this book though I wasn't as wild about the sequel(s).

I hope you like it.

I'll try to think about other books we might have discussed. If you remember any more about the book you are thinking of, please share.

Hilary Yes, I noticed all the sequels, some mixed reviews for those, this one sounds great. After Hollis Woods, the Ada books and then the Skylark's we are really struggling to find a read that lives up to our (now very high) expectations!

Lisa Vegan This one is great. Hilary, I think both of you would enjoy it.

Hilary This sounds wonderful, we can't wait. Apart from the sequels have you read anything else by this author?

I haven't. It looks like I have a few on my to read list.

Homecoming is one of my favorite books though, even though I don't think I have it on my favorites shelf. I really loved it though.

Laura Lisa, if this isn't too depressing, maybe I would like it? Does it take place on MD's eastern shore? Weirdly, that's how I found it. Interesting you and Hilary are talking about it now!

Hilary We have a copy on the way and will read this next, it does sound good!

Laura I hope you love it, Hilary!

Hilary Thanks Laura!

Lisa Vegan Laura, You haven't read this?! Yes, I think you'd like it very much.

Lisa Vegan You're making me want to reread my copy, Hilary and Laura.

I doubt I'll keep mine because I'm assuming most good U.S. libraries will have it. Hopefully!!!

Laura Thanks, Lisa. Not depressing at all?

Laura, Well we call take things differently but no I didn't find it depressing at all. Dicey is a wonderful, strong character and big sister. There is a bit of suspense and excitement and some sadness but overall I'd call this a happy story, funny as that sounds. I could be wrong but I think you'd like it a lot.

Laura Thanks. Does it take place on the water?

Most of it no. A bit of it. I think toward the end a bit of it. It's been a while since I read it but I'm pretty sure that most of it doesn't. I remember other natural and human made settings though.

What are your concerns? It seems you have them.

Laura It wasn't the kind of story I was looking for but it supposedly takes place on Maryland's eastern shore but based on the book desc and what you're saying, it doesn't. I was looking for a shore book.

Ah. Okay. well if you're looking for a shore book, most of this book isn't. As I said, there are parts toward the end that are, I think, but overall nope. It's a great book though. I hope you find a really great shore book! I'll think too...

Laura I'm really looking for something along the lines of Kearsley(sp), HF, maybe with a little romance off to the side, a little paranormal, even a ghost story would be ok. It doesn't really have to be the shore, but any type of water would be good.

You could ask for recommendations in the group What's the Name of That Book? It's not just for finding forgotten books but finding books to read too. I'll think but noting is coming to mind...Do you belong to any groups that helps people find books? And look at people's shelves who have similar books shelved? Would Mary Stewart work? She often has suspense on islands/by the sea.

Laura There's a woman at a local library who gives great recs but the library was closed today so I'm going to try and reach her tomorrow. In the meantime, yes, there are a couple of authors I need to look up. Thanks Lisa.

Lisa Vegan Laura, You're so lucky to have a good librarian! I hope she can help this time and that you can get the book(s) in time.

message 26: by Laura (new)

Laura :)) If not, I do have backups but I'm looking for that perfect book.

Jackie Penner Would this be a book you could read to a 7 and 8 year old?
