This is an exciting and heartfelt story about a strong girl and her younger siblings who are 鈥渙n their own鈥 when they鈥檙e apparently abandoned by their mother. I鈥檝e always loved tales of kids left on their own (see A Long Way To Go, etc.) and this is a particularly good book with a compelling main character.

Hilary, I absolutely love this book though I wasn't as wild about the sequel(s).
I hope you like it.
I'll try to think about other books we might have discussed. If you remember any more about the book you are thinking of, please share.

I haven't. It looks like I have a few on my to read list.
Homecoming is one of my favorite books though, even though I don't think I have it on my favorites shelf. I really loved it though.

I hope you love it. I think that both of you will, Hilary.

I doubt I'll keep mine because I'm assuming most good U.S. libraries will have it. Hopefully!!!

Laura, Well we call take things differently but no I didn't find it depressing at all. Dicey is a wonderful, strong character and big sister. There is a bit of suspense and excitement and some sadness but overall I'd call this a happy story, funny as that sounds. I could be wrong but I think you'd like it a lot.

Most of it no. A bit of it. I think toward the end a bit of it. It's been a while since I read it but I'm pretty sure that most of it doesn't. I remember other natural and human made settings though.

Ah. Okay. well if you're looking for a shore book, most of this book isn't. As I said, there are parts toward the end that are, I think, but overall nope. It's a great book though. I hope you find a really great shore book! I'll think too...

You could ask for recommendations in the group What's the Name of That Book? It's not just for finding forgotten books but finding books to read too. I'll think but noting is coming to mind...Do you belong to any groups that helps people find books? And look at people's shelves who have similar books shelved? Would Mary Stewart work? She often has suspense on islands/by the sea.

Good. Backups are important!
